"Echoes of Laughter"

They say a caregiver has a precious soul,
Bringing comfort, making broken hearts feel whole.
But what of the moments that the patient gives,
The small, bright flashes where their true self lives?
I sit with her in silence, holding hands,
Through shifting tides and unfamiliar lands.
And then a memory, a joke from long ago,
A tiny spark, setting her face aglow.
A smile appears, a melody to see,
Recalling the woman she used to be.
It's not just a reflex, but a deep design,
An echo of laughter, a beautiful, rare sign.
And in that smile, I see her, whole and clear,
Dispelling doubt and banishing my fear.
For in the face of what time takes away,
That one bright smile can make a long, hard day.
And as the seasons turn and memory fades,
I’ll hold that image through the changing shades,
A cherished payment, worth more than all the rest,
The simple gift of a soul made manifest.
