Why are essential amino acids important?
• They’re the building blocks of proteins—used to build muscle, enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters, and immune molecules.
• Some are especially critical for muscle repair (like leucine).
• Others are key to neurotransmitter production (like tryptophan → serotonin, phenylalanine → dopamine).

In contrast, non-essential amino acids can be made by your body from other compounds—even if you don’t eat them.

Bottom line:

Essential amino acids are essential because you can’t live without them and can’t make them, so they must come from food (especially protein sources like meat, dairy, eggs, soy, quinoa, etc.).
