Cold Sore Virus Linked to Alzheimer’s, Antivirals May Lower Risk

A large U.S. study has found that people with symptomatic herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), the virus behind cold sores, are significantly more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers analyzed health data from over 340,000 individuals and discovered that HSV-1 infection was associated with an 80% higher likelihood of Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

However, individuals with HSV-1 who took antiviral medication were 17% less likely to develop the disease, suggesting a potential protective effect.

Other herpes viruses, including HSV-2 and varicella zoster, were also linked to elevated dementia risk.

While the study is observational and can't confirm causation, it supports the theory that HSV-1 may contribute to Alzheimer’s through brain inflammation and amyloid-beta accumulation.

The findings reinforce the need to consider herpes virus prevention and treatment in public health efforts to reduce dementia risk.

We suggest that you take your baby to a dentist as soon as that first tooth pops through. Not only is it important for them to have regular checks but it also helps babies and children get use to the dental environment – the noises, the smells, the dental assistants, and the doctor.

Although it can often be challenging getting your children to brush their teeth and to brush them long enough and effectively. Routine is key for children from a very young age. You can help encourage your child to brush their teeth through songs, videos and distraction. 🦷 🪥 🤠
