Proud to share the great work of these community partners! Your passion is evident in the students you serve!

Be Well Victoria is so proud to support BWV Coalition Member, Chanel Hicks, and UHV Counseling Center in placing this memorial on UHV’s campus. Each of these 1,100 flags represents college aged students that die by su***de every year. UHV wants to raise awareness and let students know they are not alone. Next week will be End The Stigma week on campus. Stay tuned as BWV will post the events.

Victoria College designated Mother-Friendly Worksite
Mother Friendly
Victoria College was recently designated a Mother-Friendly Worksite by the Texas State Department of Health Services.

“It is a great achievement to reach the Mother Friendly guidelines,” said Texas AHEC East-Victoria Region Program Coordinator Paula Crawford, who worked with VC Human Resources Executive Director Terri Kurtz for about a year to ensure VC complies with the guidelines. “We should all be helping and supporting breastfeeding mothers.”

According to TexasMotherFriendly.org, breastfeeding employees miss work less often and breast-fed infants are healthier, which results in lower healthcare costs.

Victoria College has complied with the provisions of Chapter 165 of the Texas Health and Safety Code to receive the designation.

Mother-Friendly Worksites must provide:

· work schedule flexibility to allow adequate time for the expression of breastmilk;

· access to a clean, safe water source and a sink to wash hands and clean pumping equipment; and

· access to hygienic options for storage or expressed breastmilk.

There are currently 2,464 Mother-Friendly Worksites in Texas, including seven in Victoria.

The Victoria County Public Health Department is working in our neighborhoods and communities to promote healthier choices and give all residents a better chance for a healthy lifestyle.
Improving access to healthy food

People who lack access to healthy food are at greater risk of obesity and obesity-related diseases. Many low-income residents in Victoria County live far from grocery stores or lack adequate transportation; they often rely on convenience stores or fast food restaurants for food. Low-income and minority populations in Victoria County have higher obesity rates, lower rates of fruit and vegetable consumption and higher rates of youth consumption of sweetened beverages.

You can exercise, choose the right food options and follow all your doctor's instructions and still be unhealthy if the environment isn't healthy.

Through the Healthy Communities program you will learn how your health and the environment impact each other and how proper waste management can decrease these impacts. We will show you how the air, water and soil connects to cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke and diabetes. You will learn how to take practical, every day steps to improve your health and the health of your community.

Here are some ways we’re working to improve access to healthy food:
• Breastfeeding in the workplace - Resources for employers who wish to provide a supportive environment for breastfeeding employees, comply with the new Fair Labor Standards Act, and get recognition for having a breastfeeding-friendly workplace.
• Community Garden Development – Expanding existing community and development of new community gardens in Victoria County and promoting healthy neighborhood stores program and increasing healthy food options, including fresh produce.
Fit Vic! - Everyone has a role to play in reducing childhood obesity, including parents, elected officials, schools, health care professionals, faith-based and community-based organizations, and private sector companies. Learn about our community success stories.
