🚗 Did You Know Future Cars May Refuse to Start If You're Drunk?

It sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, but it's already federal law — sort of.

Congress passed legislation requiring the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to mandate passive alcohol detection technology in all new vehicles. We're talking built-in sensors that automatically detect impairment and prevent the car from starting — no breathalyzer tube required.

Here's the twist: NHTSA just announced this month that the technology isn't ready yet. The error rate is still too high, and the timeline has been pushed back. But make no mistake — this is coming.

The direction is clear. From California's expanding IID requirements to federal mandates for in-car detection technology, enforcement is only getting tighter. If you're currently navigating a DUI in the High Desert, the best move you can make right now is getting compliant — starting with your court-ordered DUI education program.

📰 Update: California's Mandatory IID Bill Is Moving Forward

We've shared this before, but there's a significant development worth noting. AB 1830 — the bill that would require ignition interlock devices for ALL DUI convictions, including first-time offenders — just passed its first committee vote unanimously and is now advancing through the legislature.

Supporters say there should be no "first-time free pass." Opponents argue it removes judicial discretion.

Either way, the message is clear: California is getting tougher on DUI enforcement. If you're navigating a DUI charge in the High Desert right now, the time to get compliant is now — not later.

Jackson-Bibby offers state-licensed DUI programs right here in Victorville — and if you need an ignition interlock device, we can refer you to trusted local IID providers too. We're here to help you check every box.

💸 Did You Know a First-Time DUI in California Averages $13,500?

That's not a typo. Between fines, penalties, court costs, increased insurance, and required programs, a first-time DUI conviction in California carries an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties — plus a suspended license.

And that's before you factor in lost wages, IID installation, or attorney fees.

If you've been charged with a DUI in Victorville, Hesperia, Apple Valley, or anywhere in the High Desert, completing your court-ordered DUI education program is one of the most important steps toward putting this behind you — and getting your license back.

🚨 California DUI Law Update: What You Need to Know in 2026
California just extended the Ignition Interlock Device (IID) program through January 1, 2033. That means if you've been convicted of a DUI involving alcohol, you may be required to install a breathalyzer device in your vehicle before you can get back behind the wheel.
On top of that, new laws now increase probation terms for DUI-related vehicular manslaughter from 2 years to up to 5 years.
The consequences of a DUI are real — and they're getting stricter. If you've been ordered to complete a DUI program as part of your sentencing or DMV reinstatement, we're here to help.

🚨 Did you know that over 50% of drivers killed in California crashes who were tested now test positive for drugs — and many of them were using legal prescriptions or ma*****na?
Drug DUIs are on the rise across California, and here in San Bernardino County, local courts are seeing more of these cases than ever. What's catching people off guard is this:
✅ A valid prescription does NOT protect you from a DUI charge.
✅ A medical ma*****na card does NOT protect you from a DUI charge.
✅ Legal use is not a defense — impairment is what the law looks at.
Common medications like Xanax, Ambien, Adderall, and even over-the-counter allergy meds can lead to a DUI arrest if they affect your ability to drive safely. And with no "legal limit" for drugs the way there is for alcohol, these cases can be complicated — and the penalties are just as serious as an alcohol DUI.
We put together a detailed guide breaking down everything you need to know — from how police detect drug impairment, to which medications are most commonly involved, to what the penalties look like for first and multiple offenders.
