Colder temperatures can bring extra risks for seniors and individuals with chronic illness. Dress in layers, keep indoor temperatures warm, and avoid prolonged exposure to the cold. Watch for signs of hypothermia like confusion, shivering, or fatigue. Always check in on loved ones who may be vulnerable in winter weather. A little preparation can go a long way in keeping everyone safe and well.

Meet Robert Beckum, one of the compassionate chaplains serving patients and families at Community Hospice.

A proud Vidalia Comprehensive High School graduate (Class of 1991), Robert has spent years in ministry - preaching for 17 years and serving as an assistant pastor for about 15 years.

Robert feels the Lord led him into hospice ministry, where he can walk alongside people during life’s most tender and difficult moments. What he loves most is offering comfort, prayer, and peace to patients and families during a distressful time.

A guiding scripture for Robert is Matthew 7:12:
“Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you, do even so unto them…”

And a verse he holds close is Jeremiah 29:11, a reminder of God’s thoughts of peace and hope.

We’re grateful for the compassion, faith, and steady presence Robert brings to our patients and families every day.

Don't know the difference? Palliative care and hospice care both provide comfort, but they are not the same. Palliative care can begin at any stage of illness, alongside treatments, while hospice is typically chosen when curative treatments are no longer pursued. Both focus on quality of life, symptom management, and emotional support. Understanding the difference can help families make empowered, informed decisions.

Not sure if hospice is the right choice or when to begin? You're not alone. Hospice care is available to individuals facing life-limiting illness, typically with a prognosis of six months or less. If curative treatment is no longer effective or desired, hospice may be the right step.
