Expressing so much gratitude to Dr. Aukstuolis, Dr. Eghrari, and our amazing team both in and out of the office for the amazing care they provide, especially when I’m away from the office working on my own professional development.

Over the next 3 days, I am experiencing a complete immersion in professional development, mindset work, learning and growth with so many amazing and inspiring physician CEOs at the annual 💕

And how lucky am I that my amazing experience started at the airport and breakthroughs were already happening on the plane!🙏✈️

Happy ! ✨☕

Mondays feel a whole lot brighter with a hot cup of coffee and a mission worth waking up for. Grateful for the fuel, the focus, and the community that makes the journey of building something bigger than myself so meaningful.

Here’s to starting the day (and the week!) with energy, purpose, and a little caffeine-powered joy. 💼☕💡

A friend recently told me about the most nagging cough that her husband had been struggling with at night. His cough was not only disruptive to him, but was also interfering with her sleep as well.🫩🥱 At first, it was assumed that it could be something structural, but the reality is that a cough at night can come from so many different places.

Sometimes, night cough can be from reflux, even without the classic heartburn symptoms. Sometimes it’s a presentation of cough variant asthma, and that’s without ever hearing wheezing. One of the most common reasons? Post-nasal drip - which could be allergic or non-allergic. Even without an obvious reason, these are the most common underlying causes.

The hardest part is not knowing what’s really behind it. When symptoms don’t make sense, it’s easy to feel stuck—tired, frustrated, and unsure of what to try next.

That’s where we come in. At Kaufman Allergy Asthma & Immunology, we help kids and adults get to the root of symptoms like these. We listen carefully, we investigate thoroughly with testing that’s easily done in the office, and we create a plan that brings real relief.

Because when you know the “why,” you can finally find the “how” to feel better.

Our goal is simple: to help reduce the symptoms that are nagging, annoying and disruptive, and improve the quality of life that everyone clearly deserves.😴

Time to say goodbye to endless guessing, and restore the nights of restful sleep! There are answers—and we are happy to help you find them here.

✨ There’s something magical about early fall evenings — crisp air, golden light, leaves just starting to turn 🍂. But along with the beauty comes ragweed… and for many, that means misery.

Today I saw a patient who knows this season all too well. Despite using multiple allergy medicines and inhalers, her symptoms were still flaring — congestion, itchy eyes, skin irritation, and asthma that just wasn’t under control. She was exhausted, frustrated, and simply wanted her life back.

That’s the reality of ragweed season for so many. And here’s the truth: no one chooses to have allergies, but there is a choice in how they’re managed. 🌱

Our goal is always the same — to get down to the cause, not just mask symptoms. With the right plan, we can reduce symptoms, cut down on the need for medications, and help patients feel better, breathe easier, and actually enjoy this season.

Most importantly, we want our patients to feel comfortable, heard, and truly cared for every step of the way.🫶

Happy Friday, friends! Enjoy the beautiful weekend, and then when you’re ready, come see us in the office?!😉

A day in the life of the Allergist mom:

I showed up at the baseball field this morning for my son’s game, finding that one of his teammates had just been stung by some sort of stinging insect when he had reached down to pick up a baseball near the fence.

His shoulder was a little pink and slightly swollen at the site of the sting, but thankfully, he was otherwise perfectly fine. A little ice for the swelling🧊, some time on the bench for observation, and then back to playing in no time!

With a busy fall schedule and activities that are in full swing, here are some helpful tips about stings to keep you safe and help you manage:

🐝 Stay away! Watch out for open garbage cans and concession stands, wooden bleachers or under benches which could hide wasp nests, chain link fences, dugout roofs, light poles or scoreboard structures which could house nests in cracks, crevices, or hollow tubing.

🐝 Symptoms of a non-allergic insect sting include redness, swelling and/or itching at the site of the sting. Ice and observation are great first steps, followed by some anti-inflammatory meds if needed.

🐝 Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) may include itching and hives, swelling in the throat or tongue, difficulty breathing, dizziness, stomach cramps, nausea or diarrhea.

🐝 If you have a serious reaction, get emergency medical treatment and then follow-up with your allergist.

So who needs allergy testing??
👉 Believe it or not, it’s only those who have had anaphylaxis from a sting who are actually at increased risk for a serious reaction from a subsequent sting. Those individuals should see an allergist and be tested.

What about my son’s teammate?
👉 He is actually at no increased risk compared to the general population, so no testing is indicated. Reassurance and guidance on avoidance is all that is needed!🫶

🍂 Saturday morning at the baseball field — the sky is clear, the air is crisp… and the ragweed pollen is high.🌾 Stuffiness, sniffling and that lingering cough…the sounds of fall are all too familiar.

No one chooses to have allergies. But there is choice in how to manage them.

Take my son Damon — since starting allergy shots last year, his allergy symptoms are now gone. He’s breathing easier, free from congestion, and no longer requires medications to manage the symptoms that were previously so limiting.🤧

Allergy shots don’t just mask symptoms — they address the immune response to allergen exposure, helping to reduce symptoms, decrease the need for meds, and improve quality of life long-term (even after stopping immunotherapy).

Trust me when I tell you, immunotherapy is life changing. Seasonal allergies do not have to ruin your weekend plans.

Come see us in the office, and see if allergy shots are right for you?!

🍎Apple picking is a favorite fall weekend activity here in Northern Virginia, and as the leaves are gently beginning to turn 🍁🍂, it’s such a great time to get outside!

👉But did you know that up to 40% of people with certain pollen allergies have allergy symptoms when they eat fresh fruit 🍏 (and also some vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes)?
🍎🍐🍌🍉🍒🍑🥭🥝🥑🥔🥜

Pollen food allergy syndrome (aka oral allergy syndrome) most often manifests with itching, tingling and mild swelling of the lips, tongue, gums, roof of the mouth or back of the throat.

Symptoms may range from mild to severe🆘, and sometimes may lessen as environmental allergies are corrected with immunotherapy.

The best guidance is to make an appointment with your friendly community allergist🙋‍♀️, get evaluated, tested, and get the guidance you need to keep you safe and still allow you to enjoy the fruits of the fall season!🌳🍎🍏

Even though a seasonal PSL is now on the autumn short list, the August☀️is still going strong - especially on vacation.🥵

I don’t go far without a 👒 and 🕶 with me, as my type 2 skin needs massive reapplication of sunscreen despite a shady⛱️.

Contact dermatitis to common ingredients found in sunscreen and other topical products (fragrance, common preservatives, and the chemical blockers that absorb the UV rays) is also extremely common!🧴In those who have eczema, like me, these triggers can contribute to skin inflammation.

Before booking an appointment for evaluation and patch testing, here are a few simple tips to get you started:

1️⃣ Wear sun protective clothing, a wide brimmed hat, and find a seat in the shade.
2️⃣ Choose sun protective products that use physical blockers like zinc or titanium, and avoid chemical blockers in sunscreen.
3️⃣ Check out web resources like SkinSafeProducts.com to help select products that don’t contain common contact allergens.
4️⃣ After a dip in a chlorinated pool, rinse the skin off with fresh water.
5️⃣ Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

📲 Then when the time is right, make an appointment with your friendly community allergist.

Our team can help you get to the source of the problem, identify what ingredients to avoid, and help you get back to enjoying life’s outdoor pursuits again!!
