At Integrative Hyperbaric & Wound Care we strive to give patients the best care and provide the greatest comfort in their treatment. All of our staff physicians are extensively trained & certified in hyperbaric medicine and are fully equipped to handle any case requiring hyperbaric oxygen therapy. What is Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT)? It is a medical treatment in which the patient is entirely enclosed in a chamber and breathes 100% oxygen while the chamber pressure is increased to a pressure greater than one atmosphere (1ATA). In HBOT the patient inhales oxygen at high pressure inside a chamber. In the hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber, the air pressure is raised up to 1.3 to 3 ATA which is higher than the normal atmospheric pressure 1ATA. Under these conditions, your lungs can gather more oxygen than normal conditions which dissolves in the blood plasma. Why (HBOT)? It has long been known that healing many areas of the body cannot take place without appropriate oxygen levels in the tissue. Most illnesses and injuries occur, and often linger, at the cellular or tissue level. In many cases, such as: circulatory problems; non-healing wounds; and strokes, adequate oxygen cannot reach the damaged area and the body's natural healing ability is unable to function properly. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy provides this extra oxygen naturally and with minimal side effects. What does (HBOT) Treat:
While there are countless benefits to (HBOT) the FDA has approved 14 indications for its use. These applications are covered by most insurance companies.
1. Arterial Insufficiency (Diabetic Ulcers)
2. Delayed Radiation Injury
3. Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss
4. Compromised Skin Grafts and Flaps
5. Osteomyelitis
6. Thermal Burn Injury
7. Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections
8. Severe Anemia
9. Crush Injury
10. Decompression Sickness
11. Air or Gas Embolism
12. Gas Gangrene
13. Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
14. Intracranial Abscess

Are there any side effects? The most common side effect is barotrauma to the ears and sinuses caused by the change in pressure. To minimize this risk, patients learn techniques to promote adequate clearing of the ears during compression or tubes may be inserted in the ears. Occasionally some patients may experience changes in their vision during their treatment period. These changes are usually minor and temporary. A rare side effect is oxygen toxicity which is caused by administering too much oxygen. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy improves the quality of life of the patient in many areas when standard medicine is not working.
