🎙️ NEW EPISODE: SLPs Talk Dyslexia: Myths, Gaps, and What They Wish They Learned

At ASHA this year, we asked dozens of SLPs and grad students one question:
✨ “What do you know,or wish you knew, about dyslexia?”

Their answers were honest, emotional, and incredibly important.

In this episode, Tristen sits down with Susan and Maggie to unpack:

🔹 The biggest myths SLPs still hear
🔹 Why dyslexia is NOT a visual issue (no, letters don’t flip!)
🔹 The training gaps in grad school
🔹 Personal stories from dyslexic SLPs
🔹 How SLPs can lead dyslexia intervention with the right tools
🔹 The literacy crisis happening in schools right now
🔹 The questions SLPs are begging for clear answers to

If you’re a parent, educator, or SLP who wants clarity around dyslexia and structured literacy… this one’s for you. ❤️

Are we helping our kids become independent… or accidentally holding them back?

This week on More Than Words, Tristen sits down with Karyn Ewart, licensed clinical psychologist and Founder of The Sycamore School, to talk about what it really means to raise independent, resilient learners.

From toddlerhood to the teenage years, Karyn shares practical, compassionate strategies for fostering independence—without burning yourself out.

You’ll learn about:

✨ The “I do, we do, you do” model

✨ Letting kids make (safe) mistakes

✨ The power of unstructured time

✨ Self-advocacy, boundaries, and natural consequences

✨ How to support kids with learning differences

This conversation is packed with real-life examples and wisdom every parent needs to hear.

It’s Giving Tuesday, and we’re celebrating by highlighting a few meaningful ways to support literacy, language, and families in our community ❤️

📚 1. Donate to Books & Bites!

We’re still collecting gently used children’s books + non-perishable food items at all RLLC locations through December 18. If you have leftover pantry items from Thanksgiving or books your kids have outgrown, this is the perfect way to share them!

🔎 2. Support dyslexia advocacy

You can donate directly to the IDA–DC Branch, which provides training, resources, and community support for families navigating dyslexia.

đź“– 3. Give to other literacy and language causes

• Support Little Free Libraries
• Donate to local libraries
• Give to organizations like Reach Out & Read or Reading Is Fundamental
• Support speech & language nonprofits
Every act of giving—big or small—helps strengthen the future for our learners.

Thank you for giving with heart today. 🤍

Thank you to the amazing family who donated an entire box of books to our Books & Bites Community Drive! We’re so grateful — and we’d love to see the same momentum at all our offices.

If you realized after Thanksgiving that you bought more non-perishables than you needed (extra green beans, canned veggies, broth, pasta… it happens!), this is the perfect time to put them to good use.

And if your child has outgrown some of their favorite stories or you’ve been meaning to clear out a few gently used books from your shelves, we’d love to give them a new home.

You can donate very gently used children’s books or non-perishable food items in the Books & Bites bins located in every RLLC lobby. Every single donation helps support a child or family in our community.

We’re accepting donations through December 18 — let’s fill every box together!

Check out our website to see what each office is accepting!

This week, one of our amazing therapists participated in ASHA’s Hill Day 2025, joining fellow advocates on Capitol Hill to champion the needs of individuals with speech, language, and literacy challenges.

Hill Day brings professionals from across the country together to meet with legislators, share real-world insights, and push for policies that support access to high-quality speech-language services.

We’re so proud to have team members who lead with passion, purpose, and advocacy — both inside and outside the therapy room. 💙✨

We’re here at the ASHA Convention all week — come say hi!

Our booth is stocked with literacy + vocabulary materials, fun card games, and resources you can use right away with your students.

If you’re attending ASHA, we’d love to meet you, chat about language and literacy, and send you home with some helpful tools.

✨ NEW EPISODE! ✨

If you’ve ever wondered why your child with ADHD seems to need movement, structure, or a packed activity schedule — this episode is for you.

This week on More Than Words: Treating the Whole Child, Dr. Lisa Bennett from MindWell Psychology joins us to unpack the real neurological reasons behind “keep ’em busy.”

We talk about:
🧠 What ADHD is (in a way that makes sense!)
⚙️ Why some kids function best in “higher gears”
🏊‍♂️ How movement, sports, and routines help kids regulate
📚 When structure supports growth — and when it becomes too much
🤝 How parents can find the sweet spot for their child
💊 What to consider if you’re hesitant about medication

This is one of our most practical, compassionate episodes yet — especially if you’re navigating busy schedules, big energy, or burnout this time of year.
