Case of The Week
A 76 year old female presents with a white patch on the left lateral tongue. She does not smoke or drink. She has no symptoms and states her Dentist found it on routine exam. I biopsied the lesion and a diagnosis of Moderate Dysplasia was made by the Oral Pathologists at VCU. Dysplasia is a pre malignant lesion that comes in 3 flavors before becoming cancer....mild, moderate and severe. I recommended laser fulgaration of the left lateral tongue to vaporize the tissue then allow it to heal for a month and grow new healthy tissue. The patient is cured now but under tight surveillance by me, her dentist and herself for the next 5 years.
