Get to know Andrea Roca our next featured match of 2025. She graduated from Nova Southeastern university Dr Kiran C Patel College of Allopathic Medicine and matched Larkin Community Hospital in Miami, FL. She was also a 2024 AALOS UNIDOS scholar!

In her own words:
“My path to orthopedics started later than most, and without a home program, finding opportunities was a challenge. But I didn’t let that stop me. I took a research year with Dr. Singh at Rush, worked hard, built my CV, and beat the odds to be here. I feel incredibly grateful and excited, but more than anything, I want to say that if you’re interested in orthopedics, there’s a place for you. It takes determination and hard work, but it’s absolutely possible. And the field needs more orthopedic surgeons who look like you.”

Congratulations on your match and your full-circle journey! Welcome to AALOS.

Get to know Sean Hernandez our next featured match of 2025. He matched at Medical College of Wisconsin.
In his own words:
“As the youngest of four and the first in my family to attend medical school, I overcame financial and academic challenges, including working multiple jobs, constantly applying for scholarships, and developing my own pre-medical curriculum at a small state school. These experiences led me to work with Richard Armenta, gaining invaluable research experience and the opportunity to complete a post-baccalaureate research year at the NIH. Matching into orthopedic surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin is a proud moment for me and my family, and I am honored to represent the small but growing number of Latinos in this field. I’m excited to continue working with and giving back to my community, helping others from underrepresented backgrounds pursue their dreams in medicine.”

Congratulations on your match and your full-circle journey! Welcome to AALOS.

Get to know Christina Stach our next featured match of 2025. She graduated from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and matched at St. Luke’s University Health Network in Pennsylvania.
In her own words:
“I knew I wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon when I was 7 years old. When coming home from school, my brother and I would fight over the computer — he wanted to play World of Warcraft, I wanted to play total knee arthroplasty simulator on EdHeads.
I struggled with my grades during high school so I explored non-medical jobs, from police work to makeup artistry, but kept finding my way back to bones. I worked for Dr. Alberto Bolanos, an arthroplasty surgeon in the Bay Area, for a summer and was hooked for life.
Fast forward, and here I am, matched at St. Luke’s in PA, ready to live 7-year-old Tina’s dream.”

Get to know Isabella Amado our next featured match of 2025. She graduated from the TCU School of Medicine and matched at VCU.
In her own words:
“My name is Isabella Amado, I was born in Panama City, Panama. I started gymnastics when I was 5 years old and immediately fell in love with the sport. I moved to the US to pursue an Olympic dream which, after a lot of hard work, became a reality when I became the first gymnast to represent Panama in the Olympics.
Through gymnastics and the many injuries I’ve had—including an Achilles tendon rupture—I was exposed to the field of orthopaedic surgery. I almost immediately knew this was the field I wanted to pursue. I couldn’t have made my dreams come true and come back to the sport I love without the help of my orthopaedic surgeon.
I am grateful and incredibly excited to have matched into the best field and can’t wait to become an orthopaedic surgeon.”
Congratulations on your match and your inspiring journey from Olympian to orthopaedic surgeon! Welcome to AALOS.

03/29/2025

Get to know Freddy Jacome our next featured match of 2025. He graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine and matched at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program.
In his own words:
“My name is Freddy, and I was born in Ecuador and moved to the inner city of Chicago when I was 6 years old. Growing up in Chicago profoundly shaped who I am today and defined my aspirations. Many of my friends, coming from unstable family environments, succumbed to gang violence, drugs, or the legal system. Our public schools struggled with overworked and underpaid teachers who often lacked the resources necessary to support or effectively engage students dealing with complex social challenges.
Witnessing firsthand the significant consequences that inadequate guidance can have on at-risk youth, I developed a deep passion for mentoring and working with individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
My parents were immigrants with no formal education who worked minimum-wage jobs to support our household of eight. Since we could not afford to hire professionals for home repairs, my dad performed plumbing, electrical work, and other necessary maintenance himself. He taught me from an early age to be resourceful and skilled with my hands. Gaining great satisfaction from hands-on tasks, I naturally was drawn toward orthopaedic surgery.
I am excited about the prospect of becoming an orthopaedic surgeon. My long-term goal is to pursue a career in academics, where I can advocate for policy changes aimed at bridging healthcare disparities that underserved communities continue to face.”
Congratulations on your match and your incredible journey!

03/29/2025

Get to know Sal Ayala our next featured match of 2025. He graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine and matched at Allegheny Health Network. Sal was also an AALOS Unidos Scholar in 2024.

In his own words:
“I’m the youngest of five first-generation college students from the suburbs of Chicago. I went to Ohio University for undergrad and wrestled there. I then applied to medical school twice while working in the emergency room as a tech before I got accepted to the PAP program at the University of Illinois at Chicago — a one-year post-bacc program for URiM students that prepares you for direct admittance to medical school the following year.

I was always interested in orthopaedics ever since my older brother was in physical therapy school and would quiz me on anatomy and physical exam maneuvers. I did a research year between M3 and M4 at Rush with Dr. Verma and Dr. Chahla to expand my network and mentorship while building a stronger application.

During that year, I also had the opportunity to expand my network through the AALOS Scholars Program and attend AAOS. My wife is from Pittsburgh, so I did an away rotation at Allegheny and loved it! We couldn’t be more excited to spend the next five years at this amazing program and be close to family.”

Congratulations on your match and this full-circle moment! Welcome to AALOS.

03/29/2025

Get to know Isabel Reedy our next featured match of 2025. She graduated from the Medical College of Wisconsin and matched at UPMC. Isabel was an AALOS Unidos Scholar in 2023 and an AALOS IDEAS Grant Scholar in 2024.
In her own words:
“I have always existed with a feeling of in-betweenness growing up as a white-passing Latina woman. This nuanced experience not only shaped my identity, but guided my path within medicine to Orthopaedic Surgery.
Orthopaedic Surgery naturally drew me in as it emulates my own in-betweenness. It is a specialty that sits at the intersection of adaptability, strength, and finesse; not only demanding an understanding of the musculoskeletal system, but also requiring the ability to work with a diverse patient population.
It was evident that UPMC aligned with my wants as a place to train: a diverse setting where I can better understand how to care for those of various lived experiences, gain clinical skills, and foster a sense of community.” Congratulations on your match and all you’ve achieved!
