In celebration of OT Month, we are proud to highlight one of our incredible Occupational Therapists at Mercy Regional Medical Center — Mckenzi Richard! ✨

During this session, the patient practiced scooping and transferring dry noodles using an adapted utensil to simulate real-life feeding tasks. This activity helps improve:
• Upper extremity gross motor coordination
• Arm strength and range of motion
• Grip strength
• Fine motor control and utensil manipulation

An adapted spoon with built-up foam was used to support decreased dexterity, grip strength, and range of motion, helping the patient safely complete the task.

About Mckenzi:
Mckenzi became a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant in 2016 after completing her associate degree and professional program at ULM. While gaining hands-on experience as a COTA, she continued her education, earning her bachelor’s degree in Health Management and Marketing, followed by her Master’s degree through ULM’s OTA to MOT bridge program. She has been practicing as an Occupational Therapist since the end of 2020.

Outside of work, Mckenzi is a proud wife and mom to two young children, with a third on the way!

Dr. Victor White shared information about his counseling services and answered questions from attendees. Our Pink Lady volunteers were also there to talk about opportunities and even hosted a fun round of bingo! 🎉

✨ Mercy Monday Spotlight ✨

This week, we are proud to recognize Jessie O’Connor, ICU/ MedSurg Director, from Pine Prairie, Louisiana, who resides in Bayou Chicot.

Jessie has been happily married to her husband, Ed, for nearly 25 years. Together, they’ve built a beautiful family with four children—Gavin, Madeline, Cole, and Josie—and five grandchildren: Sam, Brinlee, Bexleigh, Tatum, and Katherine.

She earned her Associate Degree in Nursing from LSUA in 2003 and has dedicated her entire nursing career to our hospital ever since. Jessie later completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from NSU in 2015. Over the years, she has grown from a MedSurg nurse to ICU staff nurse, then ICU Manager, and now serves in her current leadership role as both ICU Director and MedSurg Nurse Manager.

Outside of work, Jessie enjoys reading, puzzles, camping, and most of all, spending quality time with her family and friends.

Jessie shares, “I love this hospital—it truly feels like home. I love nursing and can’t imagine myself in any other career. I enjoy getting to know and helping people during their most vulnerable times. Being part of a smaller hospital allows us to build meaningful relationships with our patients and their families. The physicians and coworkers here make it a great place to work. As a manager, I also love the opportunity to lead and teach others.”
