May is Mental Health Awareness month! One of the areas we don't talk about enough about is how our relationship with money can impact our mental health.

I know right now is hard for a lot of people financially and it's causing increased stress for a lot of folks. As a financial therapist, I help people understand how their past experiences might be impacting them today.

You have the budget. You have the agreements set with your partner. But you keep impulsively spending and don't understand why.

You might be feeling anxious about having money in your bank account. So you spend it quickly. On others, on yourself, things you don't necessarily need.

Afterward, you may feel fearful of how you're going to pay bills because now you don't have enough for the rent.

Or perhaps you're feeling guilty.

Or it caused a fight with your partner because you agreed so many times before to stop spending on the wants because you're saving for the down payment.

Maybe it brings up a deep sense of shame to do anything with money so you avoid it. "I'm so bad with money" keeps winding through your head.

Hiding the bank statements or medical bills.

You don't look at your bank accounts.

Hope you have enough.

Avoidance helps for a little bit.
But the shame keeps coming back.
Again.
And again.
And yet again.

Last week I graduated from Leadership Knox County, a fantastic 9-month program put on by Knox County Chamber Of Commerce and Purdue Extension where we learned more about our community, added new leadership skills, and identified new ways to make a difference locally. I'm grateful for the opportunity and have had the pleasure of hearing a diverse set of voices from around the county.

As a clinical social worker by trade and a therapist & business owner in Vincennes, it was important to me to learn more about the community and what was available (or not), and how I could make more of a difference. This was a starting point and I look forward to using these skills to help better Knox County.

Chronic illness can magnify financial anxiety or shame because there are so many intertwined processes happening at once. Identity, lifestyle changes, uncertainty, debt, relationships are common topics that come up with clients.

Want a place to talk about the realities of your emotional relationship to money while living with a chronic illness? Money Mindset with Chronic illness is a 10-week virtual financial therapy group starting April 7. You'll learn how you emotionally relate to money and if there are certain beliefs that may be holding you back from handling your money in a way aligned to your values. Each week will build on the next.

We take a shame free approach here. There are no "good" or "bad" money decisions. All of us make decisions with money that at the time made sense and we can shift those patterns that don't work for us.
