Pride with Purpose: Protecting Our Health

This , let’s celebrate love, identity, and community — and also protect our health.

Did you know that to***co companies have historically targeted the LGBTQ+ community with marketing campaigns that exploit our spaces, pride events, and media? As a result, LGBTQ+ individuals are more than twice as likely to use to***co products compared to their heterosexual and cisgender peers.

But we deserve better. We deserve to breathe freely, live fully, and thrive.

To***co use increases the risk of cancer, heart disease, and respiratory illness — and quitting can dramatically improve your health in just weeks.

Whether you're quitting for the first time or trying again, the Inspira Quit Center is here for you. They offer:

• FREE one-on-one and group counseling
• Ni****ne replacement therapy (patches, gum, lozenges)
• Virtual and in-person support
• Services tailored for Cumberland, Salem, and Gloucester counties

📞 Call (856) 641-8633 or visit Inspira Quit Center - https://www.inspirahealthnetwork.org/services-treatments/quit-center-smoking-and-to***co-cessation to start your journey today.

Let’s take pride in our health. Let’s quit together.

𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗘𝘀𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 — a time to shine a light on one of the most serious and often overlooked cancers.

Smoking and va**ng both play a dangerous role in increasing the risk of esophageal cancer. The harmful chemicals in to***co and e-ci******es can damage the lining of the esophagus, leading to long-term, sometimes deadly consequences.

Smokers are up to 10 times more likely to develop esophageal cancer. And while va**ng is often seen as a “safer” option, studies show it still exposes users to cancer-causing toxins.

This April, let’s spread awareness, encourage prevention, and support those affected. Your choices matter. Quitting smoking or va**ng can save your life — and the lives of those around you.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and while smoking is strongly linked to various cancers, including colorectal cancer, quitting smoking is a significant step towards reducing your risk.

• People who have smoked to***co for a long time are more likely than people who don't smoke to develop and die from colorectal cancer.

• Someone who smokes has up to 60% higher risk of colorectal cancer than someone who does not smoke.

• Someone who quits smoking lowers their risk of colorectal cancer than those who continue to smoke.

• The risk of colorectal cancer increases with the number of years spent smoking and the number of ci******es smoked per day.

• The longer someone smokes, the greater the risk for death from colorectal cancer.

If you are a smoker, you can get help with quitting. This Black History Month, Prioritize Your Health! 🖤💪🏾🚭

To***co companies have historically targeted Black communities, leading to disproportionate smoking-related health issues.

Here are some key statistics about the to***co industry's impact on Black Americans:

𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠:

• To***co companies have historically targeted Black communities with aggressive marketing, particularly for menthol ci******es. Studies show that 85% of Black smokers use menthol ci******es, compared to 29% of white smokers.

• In the 1950s, only 10% of Black smokers used menthols, but due to decades of targeted advertising, that number skyrocketed.

𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬:

• Black Americans are more likely to die from to***co-related diseases than any other racial or ethnic group, despite smoking at similar or lower rates than white Americans.

• Smoking-related illnesses are a leading cause of death among Black Americans, contributing to higher rates of lung cancer, heart disease, and stroke.

𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 & 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭:

• Despite high motivation to quit, Black smokers have lower quit rates due to reduced access to quit-smoking resources and the addictive nature of menthol ci******es.

• Community support and quit programs improve success—if you're thinking about quitting, help is available!

The 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝘁 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 is here to help you:

𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧 𝗔𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗦𝗠𝗢𝗞𝗘𝗢𝗨𝗧

Have you thought about quitting smoking, va**ng, or chewing to***co? You don’t have to quit in one day, just start with one day, so why not make today the day?

Within minutes of quitting, your heart rate and blood pressure drop to normal levels. Within 2 weeks, your circulation improves, and your lung function increases. The long-term benefits continue over time – including reduced risk of cancer and heart disease. Research shows that while quitting is difficult, with help, you can increase the likelihood of quitting successfully.

𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵.

Lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than colon, breast and prostate cancers combined.

Cigarette smoking is the top risk factor for lung cancer, with the Centers for Disease Control estimating more than 80% of all cases are caused by to***co use. Unfortunately, about 70% of lung cancer cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage when survival rates are low.

Low dose computed tomography, known as a CT scan, is key for identifying lung cancer early. According to the American Lung Association, in New Jersey, 4% of those at high risk were screened, which was significantly lower than the national rate of 6%.
Under new lung cancer screening guidelines, updated in 2021, anyone between the ages of 50 and 80 who has smoked at least 20 “pack-years” and either still smokes or quit within the last 15 years will be eligible.

A “pack-year” is calculated by multiplying the number of packs a day someone smoked during the years they smoked the most by the number of years they smoked. For example, someone could qualify by smoking pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years.

It is easier than ever to get screened for lung cancer. To save lives, eligible smokers and former smokers have to accept that they are at risk and get screened.

Smoking causes several diseases and is linked to a higher risk of breast cancer in younger, premenopausal women. Research also has shown that there may be link between very heavy second-hand smoke exposure and breast cancer risk in postmenopausal women.

Smoking also can increase complications from breast cancer treatment, including:

• damage to the lungs from radiation therapy
• difficulty healing after surgery and breast reconstruction
• higher risk of blood clots when taking hormonal therapy medicines

The Hidden Dangers of Smoking and Secondhand Smoke

Smoking doesn't just affect you—it impacts everyone around you. Here's why you should consider quitting and protecting those you love:

1. Health Risks for Smokers: Smoking is a leading cause of cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Every puff is a step towards serious health issues.

2. Secondhand Smoke: Breathing in someone else's smoke is just as harmful. Secondhand smoke causes over 41,000 deaths each year in the U.S. alone. Non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke at home or work increase their risk of developing heart disease by 25-30% and lung cancer by 20-30%.

3. Children at Risk: Kids exposed to secondhand smoke are more likely to suffer from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), acute respiratory infections, ear problems, and more severe asthma.

4. Impact on Pets: Our furry friends are also at risk. Pets exposed to secondhand smoke are more likely to develop respiratory problems, allergies, and even cancer.

Take Action Today!

*Quit Smoking: Seek support from friends, family, and health professionals.

•Create a Smoke-Free Environment: Ensure your home and car are smoke-free zones.

•Educate Others: Spread awareness about the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke.

Protect your health and the health of those you care about. Let's make the air cleaner for everyone!
