MVCS Island Employment Services

MVCS Island Employment Services Island businesses benefit from a diverse workforce. Our program supports both the employer and employee through every step of the employment process.

We work with local business owners and individuals to develop seasonal and/or year-round employment opportunities for adults with barriers to employment in our community. We receive contracts to work with eligible individuals from the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission.

Please help us congratulate Justin Corl on his touching and thoughtful rendition of "The Rainbow Connection" at the 2nd EVER Annual Aquinnah Variety Show last Thursday May 1st. There was a lot of bravery in that building that night.

Today, on World Autism Awareness Day, and every day, is committed to advocating for inclusive workplaces where neurodivergent employees can thrive.

Employers can foster an environment where autistic employees feel valued and supported by implementing clear communication strategies, offering flexible work arrangements, and creating sensory-friendly spaces.

Let’s work together to break down barriers and champion inclusive employment. Share how your workplace supports neurodiversity in the comments.

The Arc of Massachusetts is proud to partner with Massachusetts Association of People Supporting Employment First Conference!

This conference will bring together 50 career seekers with disabilities, 50 disability focused workforce professionals, and 50 parent and family advocates to build a more inclusive workforce.

The Arc is sponsoring the Parent and Family Advocate sessions that will be led by Paula Collins, who is pictured below with her son Tucker, who currently works for the WooSox baseball team. The morning parent session will feature a panel of parents who have successfully supported their children in employment. The afternoon session will connect parents with leaders from Work Without Limits Benefits and MBTA and MART travel training who can equip parents to navigate challenges related to benefits and transportation.

Thanks to generous support from the Department of Developmental Services, 10 free parent seats and 8 free career seekers are available for the conference. If you would like to register, please contact Jeff Gentry (jgentry@jvs-boston.org) at MA-APSE.

Throughout the month of July we will be highlighting what each color of the Disability Pride flag represents.
GREEN represents sensory disabilities including, deafness, blindness, lack of smell, lack of taste, audio processing disorder, and more.

Did you know...
The Disability Pride flag was created in 2019 by Ann Magill, an artist with cerebral palsy? The current flag is a revised version, since Ann Magill’s original design had the stripes zigzag to represent how people with disabilities must maneuver around all the barriers faced daily, but the color shades weren’t accommodating to people with visual impairments and the zigzag of the stripes triggered migraines and seizures for some. So Magill redesigned the flag with softer colors that also accommodate people with red-green colorblindness, and linear diagonal stripes.

Throughout the month, you may see this pastel rainbow flag, but what does it mean?

Here’s what each color represents:

🌈Red represents physical disabilities
🌈Gold stands for neurodivergence
🌈White is for invisible disabilities or undiagnosed disabilities
🌈Blue represents emotional and psychiatric disabilities
🌈Green symbolizes sensory disabilities
