"Navigator Homes board member Melinda Loberg said that when the first of the Navigator Homes residents arrived many paused to take in their surroundings.

'Their faces were uncertain and then all of a sudden their eyes lit-up and they had a smile,' Ms. Loberg said.

Polly Brown, board treasurer of Navigator Homes, said it was exciting to see the final preparations come together, including the beds made and the tables set.

'A man in a wheelchair came and went by the kitchen, and he looked out the windows and said ‘I haven’t been able to look out a window for years,’” Ms. Brown said. “Our windows are low enough so that he can do it in a wheelchair.'"

On Wednesday, February 4, Navigator Homes opened its doors to its first residents - those from Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Move-in day went smoothly, and we are thrilled to welcome thirty-two residents. As we get to know our residents from Windemere, and soon, many more, we'll share more stories about the people who now call Navigator, Home.

Meet Loretta Hester, and her son, James, on move-in day.
James has been following Navigator Homes for years. “I live in Edgartown, so I’ve been watching the construction for years,” he said. “I read about it in the newspaper, and at the time my mom didn’t need that kind of care, but I thought, If she ever does, I wonder what this place will become.” When he toured the new campus, he was immediately struck by its design and atmosphere. “It’s beautiful, so beautiful,” James said. “All the sunlight, all of this…
just seeing it aesthetically—and knowing there’s a great staff—makes it feel really great.”

And the new residents are feeling at home, which is simply heartwarming:

Katherine Sheridan was one of the residents moving in on Wednesday. Ms. Sheridan moved to the Island from Maine to be closer to her daughter and newborn grandchild. For a time she lived at Island Elderly Housing but had to move to Windemere because she kept falling.

At Windemere, Ms. Sheridan said she didn’t have a bedroom or bathroom to herself, and it was difficult to spend time outside.

“This is a big deal,” she said of her new room. “It’s just light and airy and so positive.”

This week marked a beginning and an end as the last residents of Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center made the move to the new Navigator Homes facility on Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road.

Navigator Homes, a mission‑driven nonprofit organization, was created by and for the Island community to make it possible for our elders to live surrounded by the people, places, and traditions they love. Our innovative small‑house model of care prioritizes dignity, purpose, meaningful relationships, personalized support, and a true sense of home.

Navigator is committed to caring for Medicare, Medicaid, and private-pay residents, but Medicaid reimbursement covers only a portion of the true cost of providing the high-quality, relationship-centered care and community life that our Navigator residents so richly deserve.

Upcoming Info Session at The Anchors COA – Learn About Our Navigator Homes, Small Home Skilled Nursing Care
Join us on December 2 at The Anchors Council on Aging in Edgartown for an informative session about Navigator Homes' small home model with 24/7 skilled nursing care.
If you’re curious about the project, want to better understand what skilled nursing truly means, or are considering options for yourself or a loved one, this is a great opportunity. Three members of the Alliance Health Management Services team who are directly involved in bringing this home to life will be there to answer questions and share insights.
We’ll also have several exciting updates to share about the home as we move closer to opening!
