Martha's Vineyard Medical

Martha's Vineyard Medical Serving Martha’s Vineyard with patient-centered primary care since 1985. With a new name and renewed commitment, we are taking new patients and hiring.

Call 508-693-4400 Vineyard Medical Care serves island residents and welcomes vacationing visitors who require medical attention. Since the island does not have any urgent care facilities other than the ER, Vineyard Medical Care offers medical attention to those in sudden need of care for minor illnesses. Patients may avoid unnecessary and costly hospital emergency room visits and help prevent the

ER from becoming overwhelmed with less severe instances. We are a small practice and ask for your understanding that we are not an urgent care or walk-in clinic*. We do offer same-day or next-day appointments as much as we can safely manage within the scope of our licensing.

*Walk-ins are welcome, but we do have limited availability.

*There is no on-site imaging (x-rays, ultrasounds, CT, MRI, etc.)

*Our clinicians are not pediatricians and have varying age limits based on the severity of the problem. Please check with our front office on the availability of an appointment for your child. We also offer appointments for the following services:

Exams/Tests requested by employers (e.g., physicals, TB tests, drug screenings)
Sports physicals for students
DOT exams
Police exams
Chain-of-Custody Drug Testing
Coast Guard exams

This Tick Tip Tuesday we explore the quandry - to treat your yard or not to treat your yard. Use of pesticides can reduce the number of ticks in treated areas of your yard. However, you should not rely on spraying to reduce your risk of infection. Stay vigilent (see the last two Tuesdays’ posts!).
Check out the companies ohDEER or Pure Solution on the island for all natural control services!
When using pesticides, always follow label instructions. Before spraying, check with local health or agricultural officials about:

The best time to apply pesticide in your area
The best type of pesticide to use
Rules and regulations regarding pesticide application on residential properties

This Tip Tick Tuesday, we’re talking about what to do when you’ve been bitten. Early removal of ticks prevents Lyme and many other tick-borne illnesses. Before and during a shower, look and feel your body for ticks Your whole body — especially shaded areas, including around the ears. If you find a tick, use tweezers and pull straight out firmly. Then clean the area with alcohol.

It’s Nurse Appreciation Day with a heartfelt thank you to our nurses, and all the nurses, on the frontlines of healtcare. Heroes don’t always wear capes — sometimes they wear scrubs. They are the brave, kind and compassionate souls who show up every day for their patients.

It’s Lyme Disease Awareness Month so tune in for Tick Tips all month long. As you start getting your yard ready for summer, remember that ticks thrive in leaf litter, tall grasses and brushy or wooded edges. To reduce risk at home:
• Keep grass short
• Clear brush and leaves
• Create a barrier (wood chips or gravel) between lawn and wooded areas

It’s Lyme Disease Awarenss Month for good reason — May is the start of tick season. Nymph deer ticks—the second life stage of ticks—are most active on Martha’s Vineyard from now through July. Sadly, it’s also a time when our Island population grows. Remember, nymph deer ticks are the main driver of infectious diseases such as Lyme disease, babesiosis, anaplasmosis, borrelia miyamotoi, and Powassan virus. Protect yourself out there!

Our medical assistant, Abigail (Abi) Handel, is helping lead OttoTHON at Syracuse University — a student-run dance marathon that raises funds for Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, their local children’s hospital.

Through OttoTHON, students spend the year fundraising and advocating for pediatric patients and their families, all leading up to a 10-hour dance marathon in March.

Abi chose to work at a small practice like MVM because of her strong ties to the Island. As a longtime Vineyard summer resident, she values the close-knit community and the relationships small practices build with patients. Her connection to local healthcare is also personal with her mom’s optometry practice right across the street from MVM.

If you’d like to support Abi and the cause, you can donate through the link in our bio. Every contribution helps make a difference for kids and families receiving care.

Did you know that your annual visit to the eye doctor can protect not only your vision but also your overall health. In fact, eye exams can uncover signs of systemic conditions, sometimes before other symptoms appear, including: diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sutoimmune diseases and neurologic conditions.
