APRIL IS SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH (SAAM)
During SAAM we highlight the role of the SANE Nurse.
What is a SANE: A registered nurse with specialized training to provide comprehensive, trauma- informed care to survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking. The SANE nurse bridges the gap between health care and the justice system. Their role is to provide a safe, non- judgmental environment for survivors during their time of need.
What Happens During a SANE Exam?
The exam is entirely voluntary; Survivors can choose to stop or skip any part at any time.
Medical Care: SANE’s provide preventive medications for STIs and pregnancy.
Evidence Collection: They are experts at meticulously collecting forensic evidence (like DNA or fibers) and maintaining the “chain of custody” required for legal proceedings.
Trauma- Informed Approach: SANE nurses have training to understand traumatic effects on the human brain and apply it to practice. Helping them to provide services that do not re- traumatize the survivor.
Justice Support: SANE’s can provide expert testimony in court, which has been shown to increase prosecution and conviction rates.
If you need these services, VGH has a dedicated nursing team that can assist you through our ER.
