As we head into a new year, here are a few reminders I come back to again and again in therapy 💛

🌟Communication is built through connection, not compliance.
🌟Language is just one piece of communication — gestures, AAC, facial expressions, scripts and regulation all matter.
🌟There are no prerequisites for giving a child a reliable way to communicate.
🌟Play is how children make sense of the world.

💫Progress isn’t one-size-fits-all, linear, or always obvious. Sometimes progress looks like staying engaged a little longer, trying again after frustration, initiating connection, or feeling safe enough to communicate in a new way.

💫This year, my hope is for less pressure and more presence, fewer demands and more models, and a continued focus on honoring each child’s unique communication journey.

Here’s to a year of connection, curiosity, and meaningful communication ✨

When we quiz kids, we’re often testing what they already know and adding pressure.
When we model, we’re teaching them what language can sounds like without pressuring them.

Models communication means:
🎄Saying the words for your child instead of asking them to perform
🎄Talking about what they’re doing, seeing, or feeling
🎄Repeating useful phrases over and over in everyday routines

❌Instead of:
“Say cookie”
“What color is it?”
“What’s this?”

✅Try modeling:
“More cookie!”
“Red car go!”
“You’re building a big tower”

Kids learn through exposure and connection, not pressure.
Your voice is the model, not the test!

That is incorrect! 🙅🏻‍♀️

Research shows that alternative access to communication will only increase the likelihood and success of speech-language development. Alternative access can open a door for kids to understand the power of their communication, encouraging them to use their voice. AAC can look like:

✅speech generating device (app on tablet)
✅choice board
✅physical core board
✅sign language
✅gesture
✅spelling

And more!

If you’re concerned about your child’s speech development and think they may benefit from AAC, consult a speech-language pathology’s for guidance.

Get your toddler using phrases using these strategies!

💡 Plus one rule: just like it sounds! Add one word onto something your child already says. If they use single words well, model 2-words. If they use 2-words, add a third!
💡Routine phrases: model some phrases that can be used in lots of contexts! Simple phrases like “let’s go!” “I want some more” can be applied to lots of activities throughout the day.
💡Describing words: when modeling expanded phrases, support your toddler’s vocabulary skills by modeling different descriptors. Use words for color, size, shape, and more!

If you feel your toddler’s language development is delayed, reach out for a free consultation or schedule an evaluation today to hear from a professional! 🔗 in bio!
