Unique opportunity to influence the next of physicians and surgeons. Dr. Griffin was asked to moderate his mentor performing a live demonstration of shoulder surgery for the Congress of Future Medical Leaders. This conference has "several thousand bright honors-only high school students representing all 50 states, all with a strong interest in entering the medical profession." Irreparable rotator cuff tears continue to be a problem for patients that wish to avoid replacement. Drs Griffin and Bonner helped develop a new technique "biologic tuberoplasty" which continues to evolve through great collaboration with our colleagues to manage these challenging problems. Of those we have performed many return to high level activities they enjoy. As an alternative to temporary spacers, this one provides a more permanent effect and we hope continues to relieve pain in carefully selected patients. The interest in management of rotator cuff disease is exploding. In this paper Kevin F. Bonner, MD, FAAOS and I collaborate to describe a technique for management of irreparable rotator cuff problems to avoid replacement in patients. In this technique the thick graft is applied to the tuberosity to prevent the shoulder from migrating up over time and improve pain. Further studies are needed to evaluate but we believe for the right patient this can be a helpful way to avoid replacement and may be a permanent "spacer".
