MEET CATHY COLLINS!!!!

Cathy was born April 5th, 1965, with a blood type of B+.

Due to a type 1 diabetes diagnosis received at the age of 9, Cathy requires a kidney transplant. Diabetes and high blood pressure are the primary causes of kidney failure. Cathy battles end stage kidney failure, as well as rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, which are chronic inflammatory diseases affecting her joints and skin.

Although Cathy has not started dialysis, she and her doctors have discussed the possibility and determined that peritoneal dialysis would be the most suitable option for her.

Cathy enjoys spending time with her family, particularly her grandbabies.

If you are inclined to become a kidney donor, Cathy is listed at the Norfolk Transplant Center. Further information can be found at

MEET DARIEL TAYLOR!!!!

Dariel Taylor, born on November 10, 1993, with blood type B+, embarked on a challenging journey in 2021 following his diagnosis with Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). FSGS is a rare kidney disease characterized by the development of scar tissue in the glomeruli, the kidneys' filtering units. As the disease is irreversible and its cause unknown, Dariel's medical team attributes his condition to a combination of genetic factors and a family history of hypertension.

Although Dariel has not started dialysis, he and his medical team are considering Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) as the most suitable option for his lifestyle and quality of life. Dariel has expressed his gratitude towards his Sentara Kidney Care Team for their invaluable support during this difficult period.

Dariel enjoys spending time with his wife, engaging in physical activities such as working out and hiking, and pursuing his professional passions. He serves as the Assistant Director of Visual Services at Christopher Newport University and operates his own commercial filmmaking and brand photography business.

If you feel compelled to donate a kidney to Dariel more information can be found at

Bioartificial Kidney Update 🧡

The implantable bioartificial kidney is still in development—clinical trials in humans haven’t started yet.

So far, we’ve tested small-scale prototypes in animals and confirmed that the device’s main components—the hemofilter and bioreactor—work together as intended.

These results give us confidence that, once scaled up, the device could function in humans and potentially transform kidney care.
