WHAT BROUGHT YOU INTO YOGA?
I found a book of my mother’s, Hittleman’s, that was titled something like 30 yoga poses in 30 days. I was doing a lot of sports during school and I wanted something to help stretch in between practices and games. There were stretches in the book that I wanted to try out, and by the time I was at the end of the book I realized it was helping way beyond just stretching - I felt more comfortable with my body, and it was allowing more mindfulness when I was doing basketball and swimming.
I actually felt like I was finding that flow state a little easier in my sports. I felt like I was getting into that more readily and I was like, how is this connected because I’m just doing stretches? My mind started calming down, and I was so curious about why, so I continued practicing. Eventually, I started practicing hot yoga in San Diego and that’s where it all clicked for me. I was like “Oh wow, you can find this flow state within a practice, too.” It doesn’t have to be as a support for something else, it could be its own thing.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PRACTICING YOGA, AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TEACHING?
I’ve been teaching for 10 years, and I started practicing in high school, but it was hard to find classes back then, so I was doing a lot at home.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE STYLE, CLASS, OR POSE TO TEACH AND WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF TEACHING?
What I really enjoy is what gets you into that flow state where you can connect with your breath, and you can find a moving meditation within your practice.
I’ve trained in many styles and I like to integrate all of those practices together. So, some of my teaching offers chanting and meditation, and I love having a sequence that flows that you come back to again and again because that builds your practice and you can see progress.
WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR STUDENTS TO TAKE AWAY FROM EACH CLASS?
I want my students to find that state of flow in their own practice. I want them to be able to take that sense of unity that comes from practicing into their everyday life.
