Is there a link between irritable bowel syndrome and menopause?
Menopause, due to the hormonal imbalance it causes, can make symptoms worse for those who already live with irritable bowel syndrome.
Indeed, during menopause, the drop in estrogen and progesterone decreases the production of stomach acid and bile, and also affects the digestive muscles and the way food passes along the gastrointestinal tract.
If you have symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome such as abdominal pain, bloating, constipation and/or diarrhea, talk to a doctor right away.
