9. When to use ice. Everyone loves heat, but did you know if you heat a new injury, you could make it worse? There are times for all types of therapy. Generally, you want to ice a new injury as soon as possible, within 2 hours. Then ice for the next 2 days. After that time, you want to heat to be able to stretch, then ice for the next 2 weeks. Always remember, especially for the spine, to ice before bed, never heat then go to bed. It can cause irritation and stiffness in the morning.
