Why did I become a doula? 🤱🏽
Fun fact: I had my first child over 3,000 miles away from my family in Alaska.🏔️Being a military mom means you either create a village or face the journey alone & I know firsthand how heavy that can feel. I was in a brand new place, in a brand new chapter of life, figuring it all out without my mom, my sisters, my aunties, the people I imagined would be there for these life changing moments. They visited as much as they could, and I was so grateful, but they couldn’t be there for the every night feeds, the postpartum tears, or the long stretch of six months of darkness that good ol Alaska brings.
That experience lit something in me. I became a doula because I never wanted another parent to feel that kind of isolation during such a sacred, vulnerable time. Birth and postpartum are already full of unknowns, but doing it without a lot of support? That’s a kind of strength no one should have to summon alone. I created my village and hold on to them dearly to this day. 💛
Now, I make sure I show up, as a doula, as a postpartum nurse, a birthy bestie, whatever I need to be for new parents who need someone in their corner. Whether you’re surrounded by family or starting fresh in a new city, sometimes you need someone to remind you of just how powerful you are. You deserve that. We all do. 💕
