Top labor prep tips from a midwife 🤍

There’s no perfect formula for birth, but preparing your mind, body, and environment can make a huge difference in how supported and confident you feel during labor.

A few of the biggest things we recommend:

• Practice breathing techniques before labor begins
• Learn relaxation tools ahead of time so they feel familiar
• Move freely and change positions often during labor
• Create an environment that feels warm, calm, and safe
• Surround yourself with supportive people you trust
• Consider hiring a doula for continuous labor support
• Stay flexible and work with your body, not against it

Labor is not about “performing perfectly.” It’s about feeling supported enough to surrender to the process one moment at a time. ✨

Your body was designed to communicate with you during labor — listening, breathing, resting, and feeling safe all matter more than most moms realize.

You don’t have to think about the entire birth—just this moment.

Labor becomes more manageable when you take it one breath, one contraction at a time. Your strength isn’t in “handling it all”… it’s in staying present through each wave.

You can do this moment.
And then the next.

🤍 That’s how birth unfolds.

PART 2 🤍

One thing more moms need to hear: hormonal fluctuations after birth are completely normal and physiological. Your body experiences a massive shift postpartum physically, emotionally, mentally, and hormonally all at once.

Mood swings, crying spells, irritability, feeling overwhelmed, and emotional ups and downs can happen during those early postpartum weeks. 🌿

However, if these feelings continue past the first couple weeks, become more intense, or begin interfering with daily life, please reach out for support. You do not have to struggle alone.

Sometimes postpartum emotional challenges can be connected to:

• Nutritional deficiencies
• Lack of sleep and recovery
• Minimal family or community support
• Overstimulation and mental exhaustion
• Anxiety, depression, or deeper postpartum mental health concerns

Resources that can help:

• Your midwife or OB provider
• Postpartum Support International (PSI)
• A licensed postpartum therapist or counselor
• Lactation consultants for breastfeeding-related stress
• Local mom support groups or postpartum doulas

Asking for help is not weakness — postpartum was never meant to be done alone. 🤍

Postpartum recovery — what no one really tells you 🤍 PART 1

Healing after birth takes time. Not days. Not a week or two. Often weeks to months as your body recovers physically, mentally, and emotionally from pregnancy, labor, and birth.

A few things we wish more moms were told:

• Rest is part of recovery — not something you have to “earn”
• Breastfeeding can be incredibly beautiful and physically draining
• Your body needs consistent nourishment and hydration postpartum
• Healing requires support, not pressure to “bounce back”
• Sleep deprivation and overstimulation can impact recovery deeply

One of the best things you can do before baby arrives is assign household responsibilities ahead of time. Laundry, dishes, meals, errands, and cleaning can quickly become overwhelming while your body is trying to heal.

Some of the biggest discomforts in pregnancy don’t come from something “going wrong”—they come from small, daily habits that add up over time 🤍

As your body changes, the way you move, sit, and support yourself matters more than you might think.

Here are a few common things that can quietly increase discomfort:

• Sitting for long periods of time
Staying in one position too long can create pressure in your hips and lower back, and slow down circulation—leading to more stiffness and aches throughout the day

• Holding tension in your upper body
Your jaw, shoulders, and pelvic floor are all connected. When you’re tense up top, it can translate into tightness below, making your body feel less supported and less relaxed overall

• Inconsistent hydration
Hydration plays a key role in energy levels, circulation, and even muscle function. When you’re not getting enough, your body can feel more fatigued and uncomfortable

• Lack of daily movement
Movement doesn’t have to be intense to be effective. Gentle, consistent movement helps support circulation, reduce tension, and can even encourage more optimal positioning for baby over time

• Poor posture + alignment
As your body grows and shifts, posture becomes even more important. Slouching or collapsing into your hips can add unnecessary strain and discomfort

Third trimester is here 🤍
Your body is preparing, stretching, softening, and doing the incredible work of bringing baby earthside. While every pregnancy and labor journey looks different, there are so many gentle tools that can help support your body, mind, and nervous system as birth approaches.

Here are a few favorites we recommend for preparing and coping during labor:

• Daily movement & walking
• Hip circles and gentle stretching
• Miles Circuit & Spinning Babies positions
• Deep breathing and relaxation exercises
• Birth ball movements for comfort and baby positioning
• Warm baths and magnesium soaks
• Counter pressure and partner support techniques
• Calm birth playlists, affirmations, and guided meditations

Remember: labor is not just physical — it’s mental and emotional too. Creating a calming environment, feeling supported, and learning comfort measures ahead of time can make a huge difference in how you experience birth.
