As Women’s History Month comes to a close, we’re reflecting with full hearts and deep gratitude for the incredible women who are the heart of Coastal Light Counseling.

From our founder and author Alena Scigliano, who has devoted her life to helping survivors of narcissistic abuse, to every woman on our team who brings compassion, strength, and wisdom into the therapy room—we are truly full of light.

Our clinicians are military women, military spouses, new mothers, mothers of teens and adults, and grandmothers—each with their own journey, each ready to walk beside you on yours. Their life experiences deepen the care they provide, offering a safe, understanding space for every walk of life.

Truth: You never need to feel guilty going to therapy!

Women go through many transitions that may be culturally typical but are often incredibly challenging and stressful. When something is considered “normal,” we often assume that we should be capable of handling it with ease, but that is not always true.

Transitions can be a time when we explore new aspects of our identity, learn from the past, and develop our vision and plan for the future. It can also be a time that creates feelings of overwhelm, anxiety, and isolation.

There are many aspects of life for a woman that produce change and uncertainty. Even if they are "common" or "expected" transitions, you still may want to seek out the support of a therapist.

Life transitions are a source of stress, uncertainty, and confusion. With care, they can be beautiful moments to grow and come into a new state of identity.

Here are three ways to embrace the change process:

😶 Build Emotional Awareness - Tune in to how you are feeling throughout your transition.

💕 Increase Self-Compassion- Transitions, even positive ones, are difficult experiences. Meeting yourself with loving-kindness can build resilience throughout the change process.

🎯 Focus on Realistic Expectations- Check-in with what is in your control and what isn’t, and remember that you are human! It is helpful to set goals but make sure they are attainable.

Consider what you need in this moment, and remember to be kind! No change is too small to ask for help, and therapists are trained to support you in your transitions.

Becoming a new mom (or even a mom x2+) is certainly filled with its challenges, one of which is the potential for postpartum depression.
If you're unfamiliar, this is a complex mix of physical and emotional changes that can occur to some women after having a baby.

If you have the sense that things aren't quite right, you're plagued by worry, or don't feel that "mom gene" kicking in, it doesn't mean that you have postpartum depression. However, it does mean that you could likely benefit from talking with someone about the mess of feelings going on inside you.

If you experience any of these symptoms, talk to someone about it. Start with your partner, but know that there are clinical specialists who have experience working with this sort of thing who can offer you a path back to feeling like yourself.

Have you noticed that you feel completely overwhelmed by your thoughts? Do you tend to ruminate on what you did or said in the past? Or do you find that you need to turn over every possibility in your mind before you make a decision?

If you are connected to one or all of these questions, you likely struggle with overthinking. Often this type of thinking becomes unhelpful or paralyzing in being able to live the life you want.
