It’s the last day of July — a natural pause to reflect on how fast time moves and how much can change in just one month.

At Jewish Family Service, we know that life doesn’t always follow a smooth path. If July brought challenges — whether it’s food insecurity, transportation needs, guardianship or conservatorship support, or the need to talk to someone — we are here for you.

As we step into August, know that you don’t have to navigate it alone. JFS is here to help, with compassion, dignity, and care.

💙We are so grateful for the generous donation from Jewish Women 757, the Women's Cabinet of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater, of very needed items for the JFS Food Pantry!
🥫Our shelves are really looking bare. We have a great need for toilet paper, cleaning products, women's hygeine products, shampoo, tomato sauce, canned vegetables, fruit, mac & cheese, and baby food. Please drop off any donated items to the box outside of the Jewish Community Center or call 757-321-2238 to arrange a drop off or pick up time.

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 💜

Every older adult deserves to feel safe, respected, and valued. On this important day, we come together to raise awareness, speak out against abuse, and support efforts to protect the dignity and rights of our elders.

Let’s help the seniors in our lives by learning the signs of abuse, checking in on loved ones, and advocating for stronger protections. Together, we can be a voice for those who may not be able to speak for themselves.

On June 8th, the incredible a ca****la group The Maccabeats performed live, creating an unforgettable experience for our community. A huge thank you to Bnai Israel Congregation for not only bringing this talented group to town but also organizing a food drive to support the JFS Food Pantry!
Thanks to their efforts—and the generosity of everyone who donated—we received an incredible amount of food to help stock our shelves and support local families in need. 💙

🚗 Make a Difference in less than 2 Hours! 🍽️

Looking for a meaningful way to give back? Volunteer to deliver meals to our homebound seniors through the Meals on Wheels program! It takes less than 2 hours on Thursday mornings, but the impact you’ll make lasts far longer.

We’re currently looking for:
✅ 2 permanent drivers – one for a route in Norfolk, and one in Virginia Beach
✅ Substitute drivers to step in when needed

Your time, your smile, and a warm meal can brighten someone’s entire day.

Tonight we welcome Shavuot, the festival that marks the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai — a moment that shaped not just our faith, but our identity as a people. It's more than a historical memory — it's a reminder of our ongoing relationship with tradition, learning, and spiritual growth.

As we stay up late learning Torah, enjoy sweet dairy treats, and reflect on what it means to receive wisdom anew, let's also open our hearts to what we’re still learning — about ourselves, about our community, and about the kind of world we want to help build.
