Beach Birth, Education & Wellness

Beach Birth, Education & Wellness Childbirth classes and wellness services to guide you through the healthiest pregnancy & beyond Hi! I'm Justine. I am a mother of four. I love it, most days.

I am basically the ring leader of my own personal circus. There are some particularly rough days but that is all part of . I have a huge passion for birth, so strong that my post-graduate work was focused in pre & postnatal rehabilitation. Each one of my little creations has only enhanced my passion for birth. I went through my first pregnancy not knowing birth education was even a thing! I basically followed the crowd and was pressured into making medical choices that I didn't fully understand. In the end, I was disappointed with my lack of knowledge. This is where I vowed to do things differently the next time. During my second pregnancy, my husband and I decided to take Bradley classes. It was a perfect match. We were able to use all the information that we learned in class during pregnancy. labor, and beyond. It helped me have the birth of my dreams, no medication and no interventions. I felt truly empowered giving birth with the knowledge I had I learned in class. Fast forward to today. I am a certified Bradley instructor with one medicated and three unmedicated birth experiences. My birth journey started with a high-intervention, epidural birth in a hospital and has ended with a natural birth with zero interventions in the comfort of my own home. I have given birth laying in a hospital bed, leaning over a bed, squatting next to a birth tub, and kneeling in my living room. That's right, you don't have to be stuck in a bed to give birth! Crazy, right?! After the empowering birth of my second daughter, I knew I wanted to help other women find their inner strength and achieve the birth that they desire. That is why I became an instructor. I would be honored to help guide you and your partner in this journey toward parenthood and achieve the best birth-day possible. I can't wait to work with you!

If you have ever taken a class with me you have heard me say, "medications in pregnancy are safe until they are not safe." In the first class of my birth series I have this conversation with students to show them that just because a medication is considered "safe" does not mean it comes without risks. We discuss medications that were once thought of as safe then proven to not be safe. Please check this article out. Very important information!

Also, as a side note: there is another high quality study that has linked Tylenol use during pregnancy to ge***al birth defects.

"FYI: A new study out of John Hopkins University, funded by the National Institutes of Health, was just released. It cited the use of Acetaminophen (Tylenol) during pregnancy increases the risk of ADHD and Autism in children. This is IMPORTANT because women are often told to utilize Tylenol for pain during pregnancy.

Researchers collected cord blood from 996 births and measured the level of Tylenol and two of the byproducts. By the time the babies were 8-9 years old, the babies with the highest levels of Tylenol had a:
⚠️ 2.86 times the risk of ADHD
⚠️ 3.62 times the risk of Autism

"The authors conclude that their results support earlier studies linking acetaminophen exposure in the womb with ADHD and ASD and underscore the need for additional research. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration urges careful consideration before using any pain-relieving medication during pregnancy."

Read more from the NIH announcement about the study here:
https://www.nih.gov/.../nih-funded-study-suggests...
The actual study can be found here:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31664451

NOTE: Tylenol has been proven to deplete glutathione which is the body’s main antioxidant and also depletes your sulfur stores.
NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine) is the "antidote" to Tylenol. NAC is used for Tylenol over-doses and may also help kids with low glutathione due to Tylenol exposure."

It's time we move away from outdated thoughts and assumptions. Babies are not cognitively able to manipulate you. They NEED you.

Imagine how intense hunger must feel when you’ve only ever known complete satisfaction...

Imagine how lonely a crib must feel when you have only ever experienced the cramped tight embrace of your Mama’s womb...

Imagine how deafening silence must be when you have never not heard the beating of your Mama’s heart...

Let’s all have grace and patience for the babies as they adapt to life in the big wide world. These first few months should not be a race to be separated as soon as possible. This season too shall pass 🌿

Withholding food and drink during labor is not evidence based - did you know that? “NPO,” the standard clinical term, meaning “nothing by mouth,” is often applied to laboring women. This arose from the risk of aspiration, which was occurring more often (in the 30sand 40s) related to general anesthesia policies.

Fast forward 50 years. Our anesthesia tools are WAY better. In 1997, it was found that the risk of death from aspiration during a C-section (when general anesthesia was used 41% of the time) was 1 death in every 1.4 million births. In 2002, it was again looked at, and the research found that anesthesia related maternal deaths fell 60% (and we actually don’t know if the deaths were from aspiration or some other complication).

Studies show that death and illness from aspiration are incredibly rare (and we rarely use general anesthesia for cesareans).

In 2015, researchers at the annual American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) reported that they had found one case of aspiration in the US between 2005-2013 (the woman was obese and had preeclampsia). They recommended that most healthy people would benefit from a meal in labor, and concluded that NPO is an outdated restriction.

In their position paper, ASA states: “There is insufficient evidence to draw conclusions about the relationship between fasting times for clear liquids or solids and the risk of aspiration during delivery.” Their (and ACOGs) current recommendation for clear liquids is based on expert opinion, not evidence.

📌 Of note: High risk populations, including obesity, diabetes, preeclampsia/eclampsia, or those using IV opioids in labor, currently have no evidence looking at their situation and it IS thought that their aspiration risk may be lower if they fast.

I love what Rebecca writes “The issue of eating and drinking during labor should be reframed as one of bodily choice. Low-risk laboring people, including those with epidurals, have the right to choose whether or not they would like to eat and drink during labor.”

Did they let you eat friend?! I’d love to know.

Breastmilk is a live bacterial messenger system designed to shape the newborn immune system.

During the first weeks to months of a child’s life a mother is delivering precious microbial messages that can have a life long affect on a child's health.

Today we are learning how incredibly powerful nature is in developing strong, immune, resilient children.

The role of breastfeeding to develop the jaw and straight teeth is one aspect of how important it is. Primarily teaches a child nasal breathing. Kids who struggle to breathe through their nose often have small, underdeveloped jaws. They present with long faces, crooked teeth, and poor breathing.

Secondly if proper tongue posture and feeding habits are established, the tongue creates a seal to push the ni**le to the roof of the child’s mouth. This helps to develop the child’s palate, and is designed by nature to set correct growth trajectory of the jaws and upper airways.

(As an aside I do see many kids who breastfeed today without proper connection between the tongue and the palate).

However for the immune system the breastmilk microbiome is transferred via specialized immune cells from the mothers gut.

Evidence now shows that human breastmilk can have a life long impact on a child’s health.

Oral flora delivered during breastfeeding may protect a child from allergies and asthma.
They also strengthen their immune system. Breastfeeding may protect against respiratory infections autoimmunity, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Later in life, it may also protect against heart disease, obesity, and type-II diabetes. These conditions are now understood to be largely influenced by gut microbiota.

The reason is that a newborn immune system is naïve to the outside world and depends on maternal ‘gifting’ of immune agents and probiotic bacteria.

One huge factor I think we’re missing today is the maternal gut microbiome. Prenatal maternal health as well as proper pregnancy diets are incredibly powerful for shaping these microbial messages to our next generation.

Which is why I’m so passionate about getting this information out, we must this information reach all the new parents out there.

Many parents are struggling with breastfeeding today

How was your experience with breastfeeding?

"All too often mothers are only given one side of the picture: Cesarean is better because it is less risky. Less risky for what or for whom?

As the study above rightly points out the cesarean rate has risen for decades without lowering the mortality rate for babies; without lowering the mortality rates for mothers (it has actually risen dramatically); and in the absence of research on the long term risks of cesarean birth (Ringgaard 2014)."

A great read for any pregnant or future new mom, especially those facing induction, Cesarean or scare tactics.

Many common practices are not evidence based and a variety of those are not even recommended by ACOG.

“Research shows just 30 minutes of skin to skin with dad on the first day of a newborn actually rewires dad’s brain. Stimulating many hormones especially Dopmine and Oxytocin so dads get connected to their babies and want to nurture them.” YES. Dads, get those cuddles in! ❤️

Research ha salso shown that stress and emotions play a role in the development of the unborn. Take steps to reduce stress- try not plan a home renovation, big move, buy a dog, or any other life stressor during pregnancy.

Study sheds light on relationship between perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and first time cesarian delivery among pregnant women.

The idea of babywearing being a fad is something I see regularly online and amongst certain groups of parents. It's somehow seen as a practice that has extended from attachment parenting and thus represents the "hippie" parents who center their live around their child, or

Vernix caseosa, also known as vernix, is the waxy or cheese-like white substance found coating the skin of newborn human babies. It begins to form at about 27 weeks. It is produced by dedicated cells that play protective roles during fetal development and for a few hours after birth.

Don't wash it off!! Rub it in. It's the best lubricant for the baby's skin once the are 🌏 earthside🌎

𝔹𝕖𝕟𝕖𝕗𝕚𝕥𝕤 𝕀𝕟𝕔𝕝𝕦𝕕𝕖:🌻⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
✅Germ fighting superhero - one of the primary purposes of vernix is to protect the infant from unwanted pathogens, both in the womb and out ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✅Controls temperature - with its thick, waxy coating, vernix helps to insulate the baby. infants who have it immediately washed off have a significantly higher rate of heat loss⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✅Skin cleanser and antioxidant - it offers a protective covering while going through the birth canal, allowing baby to pick up good bacteria & potentially avoid overgrowths of bad bacteria, viruses and fungi⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What purpose does vernix serve?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌿In the womb:

Prevents loss of electrolytes and fluids⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Acts as a microbial barrier from unwanted pathogens⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Provides a protective layer to facilitate skin growth⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Decreases skin pH and helps form the protective acid mantle⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Protects from pathogens⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Moisturizes and keeps skin soft⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This. All of this.

This. All of this.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but attachment parenting in a detached society is exhausting.
No. It’s not your baby.
There is nothing wrong with them if they want to be held all the time.
No. It’s not you.
You’re not doing it wrong.
Your feelings of exhaustion and depletion and being touched out are normal- considering the weight you’re carrying. Those feelings, and the deep ache underneath them - are a reminder that you were never meant to do this alone.
Babies want to be held. And we want to hold them close. Exclusive/extended breastfeeding, cosleeping, babywearing- all of these are intuitive, ancestral practices that have kept our species alive throughout history. Attachment parenting is just parenting!!
But never before have we parented in such isolation. There were always other hands stirring the soup pot, other aunties, and sisters, and uncles and grandmas, and cousins, and neighbors helping with the daily tasks and child rearing. Other arms carrying the weight of raising humanity. Together.
And now, it’s just you. Alone in the kitchen, trying to stir the soup and bounce the baby and play with the toddler and keep an eye on the big kid and answer the phone and sweep up the mess and tackle the laundry and .....
No matter how magical your baby wrap is — it can’t take the place of a whole village.
So no, you’re not doing it wrong. You’re just trying to stay connected in a world set on tearing you apart.
But don’t give up mama. I know you’re tired and touched out, but you’re giving your baby exactly what she needs. And maybe one day, when she’s raising her own babies, there will be a village around her, helping her hold it all together.

As a parents and consumers, it is important to understand the laws as well as best practices with vehicle safety. Just because it is "allowed" does not mean it is the safest choice.

March 21st 2013, this was my setup.
All was legal. They were in all the appropriate minimum weight and age seats.
This photo was taken 20 to 30 minutes before our collision while we were stopped for a break.
2 of the 3 died.

This is not to scare anyone. This is to show the importance of having the right seats for your children and how much the minimum laws are lax.

Can you spot my errors? I sure can now as a technician.

-Owen 3 almost 4, just above 40lbs in a low back booster. He survived by pure miracle with head injuries and a broken arm as well as some internal injuries.
-Hailie 4 almost 5 just above 40lbs in a low back booster. She did what we call the submarine effect and died on impact.
-Trent 17 months above 22lbs forward facing suffered internal spinal decapitation which killed him almost instantly.

My goal is to help parents and the population know that the minimum laws set forth by our government is not safe. And I want to try to help prevent more injuries and deaths to children.

When we know better we do better.

-------------------------
