This ended well after a nurse in, but it's still mind boggling that people freak out over someone nursing in public. I was asked to nurse elsewhere only once. It was at my pediatrician's office. The employee was reprimanded.

This is the dirty little secret that babies fed infant formula have a higher risk of developing Nectrotizing Entercolitis. One of the main reasons it is not available across the nation is that NICUs have to often foot the bill for donor milk, but formula companies will provide their products for "free" which incentivizes hospitals to push formula use in NICUs. That also encourages overfeeding (volume based feeding) to shorten a NICU instead of developmentally appropriate feedings. Volume based feeding results in long-term feeding problems post NICU stay, as well as increasing the use of formula, putting more babies at higher risk for NEC.

I worked at a local hospital who used volume based feedings and watched as parents were told to give 50mls per feeding on day 1 of life when developmentally the baby should have only received 5 to 10mls per feeding.

Our infant death rates in this county are abysmal, and are worse for Black families. The rates are worst in states that also have effectively banned abortion without exceptions for the life of the mother. One such state jailed a Black woman for a spontaneous miscarriage for which she was refused care and had to miscarry at home.

These issues aren't new, but they are becoming more publicly known.

Call your elected officials and let them know that too many pregnant people and infants die in this country, and too many are Black. Make sure they know you are paying attention and will vote accordingly.
