Man following out of Cherry Picker
I had just begun my pathology residency at Massachusetts General Hospital.
The other first year residents and myself were gathered around the autopsy table watching our first post (shore for post mortem...layman term would be autopsy). The prosector, a medical examiner, was instructing us as to the proper procedure. The case was what was called an ME (Medical Examiner) case since the deceased had died outside the hospital.

Pays to Pray
My father had finished his army training and was set to deploy to the South Pacific. He had been assigned to a Battalion Aid Station. Battalion Aid Stations were at the front lines. They were meant to provide immediate treatment to wounded soldiers. The mortality rate of physicians assigned to them was obviously very high.
Being orthodox, on Saturdays my father would to to synagogue. He prayed three times a day and attended Sabbath services religiously. My mother was less than reform, and the only reason she was in the synagogue that day was due to the Bar Mitzvah of one of her friend's brother.
They met and evidently it was love at first sight. My mother was engaged at the time and called her fiancée the next day to scrub the wedding.
My mother did one other thing. She told my grandfather of her plans. She told him she had met this wonderful man with whom she was in love.
I am not sure whether my mother knew this at the time, but my grandfather had an important connection. One of his golfing buddies was a Major General in the Army.
A few days later a friend told my father that he had been reassigned. My father ran to check the bulletin board. Sure enough he was now assigned to an Evacuation Hospital.
He was still in a combat zone but five miles back from the front. As my father told me, he had to worry about Japanese snipers ( they would pick off the medical officers first), and recalled an episode when a Japanese Zero made a strafing run at their hospital. An even more harrowing event occurred when a bomb landed right in front of his treatment tent. They all stood frozen waiting for the explosion but it was a dud.
I naively asked why would the Japanese drop a dud. Before my father could answer I realized the foolishness of my question.
