The Ben Carlson Memorial & Scholarship Foundation will begin accepting applications for its 2026 scholarship program on January 1 and has invited the USLA to share this opportunity with our members and followers. The scholarship is offered independently of the USLA.
Ben Carlson was a Newport Beach lifeguard who lost his life in the line of duty on July 6, 2014. He was known for his strong work ethic, love of the ocean, compassion for others, athleticism, and academic dedication.
In Ben’s memory, Ben Carlson Memorial & Scholarship Foundation awards three $20,000 scholarships to undergraduate students who demonstrate a commitment to service and embody the values Ben represented.
Applicants must have current or past experience as an open-water lifeguard or junior lifeguard and be enrolled full-time at an accredited four-year institution during the 2026–2027 academic year. Academic performance, athletics, financial need, and extenuating circumstances are all considered.
The application deadline is February 1, 2026.
