On August 2, 2010 the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) reversed its decision and granted the College of the Sequoias Physical Therapist Assistant Program Candidacy Status. Candidacy Statue indicates that a program is making satisfactory progress toward compliance with the accreditation criteria. Students completing this degree will have a foundation for the fields

of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, physics and
movement science through the study of basic principles of patient management, engineering and physics for the PTA,
physical agents and modalities, pathophysiology, orthopedics, neurorehabilitation for the PTA, therapeutic exercise and
will acquire skills for patient care, application of modalities and physical agents, implementation of therapeutic exercise
and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation under the PT plan of care and clinical education hours. This PTA program must comply
with the accreditation requirements set by the Commission Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) of
the American Physical Therapy Association. Admission Requirements: Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalency; cumulative GPA of 2.5 or
higher; 2.5 or higher GPA on combined biology prerequisites: BIOL 30 (Anatomy) 4 units; BIOL 31 (Physiology) 4 units. A minimum grade of “C” in all prerequisite courses is required. Please be advised that a “C” in all prerequisites courses does
not meet the 2.5 minimum GPA requirement. No more than one repetition of any biology course is allowed. Clinical placements will require background check and drug screen prior to clinical courses. Applications are due
by June 15th each year for fall semester. Upon admission to the program, all applicants must provide the following valid
and current information: American Heart Association Health Care Provider CPR Card; health clearance (Immunizations
and physical exam); California drivers license; California automobile insurance and reliable use of transportation. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: Upon successful completion of this degree, students will be prepared for careers or employment
in the following fields: acute care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, outpatient rehabilitation clinics, inpatient rehabilitation
centers, school based health care services.

Responsibilities
The PT Assistant (Part-time), is a novice to proficient clinician. Physical Therapist Assistants assist Physical Therapists in providing care to patients. Performs physical therapy procedures and treatments, as delegated by a Licensed Physical Therapist, designed to restore function, relieve pain and prevent permanent disability. Responsibilities include selecting therapeutic exercises and equipment most appropriate for treatment, assessing and recording patients' responses and progress, and determining when to adjust or advance patients from less to more strenuous exercises. Functions within established technical standards and guidelines, but may receive further technical guidance and direction from the Licensed Physical Therapist in handling unusual situations.

Qualifications
Education
• High School Diploma, High School Equivalency (HSE) or Completion of a CHS Approved Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Certificate required
• Successful completion of one of the following is required
o Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapy Assistant degree program
o Sat for the national examination and received a passing score to qualify for licensures occurring before January 1, 2010 as per Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services

Licenses and Certifications
• PTA - State of California Physical Therapist Assistant License required
o Exception may be made for Physical Therapy Assistant License Applicant with a requirement to obtain licensure within 180 days of hire or transfer into position
o BLS - Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers by American Heart Association (AHA) required

Responsibilities

Responsible for assisting the Physical Therapist in the provision of Physical Therapy services to patients, including treatment, program planning and implementation, related documentation, and communication. Functions under a Physical Therapist and per physician orders.



Required Skills:

Current, valid, and active license to practice as a Physical Therapy Assistant in the state of employment required.
Current BLS certification from a Vibra-approved vendor required.
Additional Qualifications/Skills:

One (1) year of experience preferred. Previous Hospital experience preferred.
Ability to project a professional image.
Knowledge of regulatory standards and compliance requirements.
Strong organizational, prioritizing and analytical skills.
Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant.
Working knowledge of computer and software applications used in job functions.
