We are excited to share that our daughter, Mia, a pre-med senior at Harvard majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology, has been awarded the John Harvard Scholarship Award, an honor reserved for the top 5% of Harvard students. Over the past two years, she has focused in the lab on her lung cancer research, all while taking on a demanding and rigorous course load. This recognition is a true testament to her dedication, hard work, and drive. We couldn’t be prouder of her and can’t wait to see her on Thanksgiving break.

Recent studies reveal that Generation X (born 1965-1980) and Millennials face higher cancer risks compared to previous generations. Research from the National Cancer Institute found that Gen X will likely experience increased rates of several cancers, including thyroid, kidney, re**al, and pancreatic cancers, as they age. These trends are partly attributed to lifestyle factors such as obesity and sedentary habits. The study emphasizes the need for further research to uncover contemporary cancer causes and explore new prevention strategies .

The findings, published in JAMA Network Open, highlight significant shifts in cancer incidence. For instance, while lung and cervical cancer rates have declined among women, rates of other cancers like colon and ovarian have risen. Similarly, men are seeing decreases in lung and liver cancers but increases in prostate and colon cancers. These projections call for enhanced focus on cancer prevention and early detection efforts tailored to younger generations.

As a physician, I feel it’s important to promote the following:
1. Promote Healthy Lifestyles: Encourage physical activity and healthy eating to combat obesity, a significant risk factor for many cancers.
2. Increase Cancer Screenings: Advocate for regular cancer screenings, especially for cancers with rising incidence rates among Gen X and Millennials.
3. Enhance Research Efforts: Support and fund research into contemporary causes of cancer and novel prevention methods.

Gen Xers and millennials have a higher risk of developing more than a dozen cancers than older generations, according to new research from the American Cancer Society.

My patients are some very remarkable people who teach me very valuable lessons. My patient, Vern has set 15 individual world records competing in the Masters World Championship Scottish Highland Games. He always pushes for his personal best. He started competing at age 53 and didn’t win his first contest until he hit 61. He continues to compete now at the age of 81 in the over 80 age group. He recently set new world records in Austin Texas competition. He never quits in life or his sport and keeps himself in terrific shape. .

So happy to be in Chicago at ASTRO, our annual radiation oncology conference in person. My first conference since the pandemic started. It is exciting to see so many great cancer developments that will benefit our patients. Social distancing and mask requirements are in effect, which is a small price to pay for such an event.

It is not too late to get vaccinated. Too many people are dying unnecessarily from COVID-19. Almost all of the recent deaths (99.5%) and hospitalized (97%) are in the unvaccinated population. There is a risk to getting vaccinated. However, the chance of dying from COVID-19 is about one in 200 for an unvaccinated person, while the chance of adverse events from an mRNA vaccine is about 2 to 4 per million.

How many more people need to die?

Occasional breakthroughs are expected with any vaccine, but more transmissible variants spread among so many unvaccinated people in the United States has placed greater strain on highly effective and safe COVID-19 vaccines.

I just got my 2nd COVID-19 Pfizer vaccination. So far just a sore arm. I am so happy to see the plans coming together for mass vaccination. The sooner we are all vaccinated the faster we can slow the spread and get back to our normal lives. Until then, please be safe.

I just got vaccinated. I am so thankful to the clinicians and scientists who have worked
to develop COVID-19 vaccines to help eradicate this deadly virus. The years of previous research on related viruses and the enormous funding that allowed firms to run multiple trials were critical in achieving this herculean accomplishment.
