Before it became brunch and bouquets, Mother’s Day was a call to action.

One of its earliest champions was Julia Ward Howe ,poet, abolitionist, suffragist, and the woman who wrote “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” She nursed and tended the wounded during the Civil War and worked with widows and orphans of soldiers on both sides, witnessing firsthand the devastation war leaves behind.

In 1870, she wrote what became known as the Mother’s Day Proclamation — a pacifist response to the carnage of the Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War, rooted in her feminist conviction that women had a responsibility to shape their societies at the political level.

The holiday we celebrate today — officially signed into law in 1914 — evolved far from that original vision.

This Mother’s Day, take a moment to honor that original spirit — the belief that mothers hold the moral power to demand a more peaceful, just world.
