We were at Southwood Jr/Sr High School for Day 3 of this week’s School Safety Fair. Students stopped by a variety of tables to learn about important topics related to well‑being, safe decision‑making, and substance‑use education.

The Wabash County To***co Free Coalition was on‑site providing information about the risks of to***co and ni****ne and offering guidance to help students make informed decisions. Our appreciation goes to Coalition Committee members Aubrey, Lorissa, and Mike for your outstanding help.

The Safety Fairs are being held at four area schools throughout the week and are coordinated by the Drug Steering Committee, which has brought together many community organizations to share resources that support student wellness.

The 2nd Safety Fair was held at Wabash Middle/High School. The Safety Fairs are taking place at four area schools throughout the week. They are organized by the Wabash County Drug Steering Committee to provide students with learning opportunities focused on health, safety, and substance‑use prevention.

Other community organizations are also participating, offering resources and activities that support student well‑being. The To***co Free Coalition is contributing by sharing information on the risks of to***co and ni****ne, along with encouragement to make healthy choices.

We appreciate Brandi and Jessi, (both Coalition Committee members), joining Suzanne, (Coalition Youth Coordinator), and encouraging the youth to be to***co free!

Why don’t you want me to use e-ci******es?
• Science shows that e-ci******es contain ingredients that are addictive and could harm different parts of
your body.
• Right now, your brain is still developing, which means you are more vulnerable to addiction.
Many e-ci******es contain ni****ne, and using ni****ne can change your brain to make you crave more ni****ne. It can also affect your memory and
concentration. I don’t want that for you!
• E-ci******es contain chemicals that are harmful.
When people use e-ci******es, they breathe in tiny particles that can harm their lungs.
• The cloud that people exhale from e-ci******es can expose you to chemicals that are not safe to breathe.
We care about you, and want you to be healthy! 😊

START THE CONVERSATION ABOUT E-CIGARETTES
Find the right moment.
• A more natural discussion will increase the likelihood that your teen will listen. Rather than saying “we need to talk,” you might ask your teen what he or she thinks about a situation you witness together, such as:
» Seeing someone use an e-cigarette in person or in a video.
» Passing an e-cigarette shop when you are walking or driving.
» Seeing an e-cigarette advertisement in a store or magazine or on the internet.

Ask for support.
• Not sure where to begin? Ask your health care provider to talk to your teen about the risks of e-ci******es.
• You might also suggest that your teen talk with other trusted adults, such as relatives, teachers, faith leaders, coaches, or counselors whom you know are aware of the risks of e-ci******es.
• These supportive adults can help reinforce your message as a parent.
YES, YOU CAN! 😊

🚭 Creating healthier air for everyone in Wabash County.

The Wabash County To***co Free Coalition, proudly supported by Wabash County United Fund, is working toward a healthier community for all. We had the opportunity to visit the Southwood 7th grade Health classes for our To***co-Free Presentation focused on the realities of va**ng, ci******es, and smokeless to***co.

We talked honestly about ni****ne addiction, the harmful chemicals found in these products, and how they can impact brain development, athletic performance, and overall health. Most importantly, we encouraged students to “Know Why You Say No.”

When students understand the why behind their choices, they’re more confident in standing up to peer pressure and protecting their future goals.

Thank you to Mrs. M. and students, for welcoming us and being engaged in the conversation. We’re proud to help empower the next generation to live to***co-free!

Talk with Your Teen About E-ci******es
BEFORE THE TALK:
Know the facts.
• Get credible information about e-ci******es and young people at: E-ci******es.SurgeonGeneral.gov.
Be patient and ready to listen.
• Avoid criticism and encourage an open dialogue.
• Remember, your goal is to have a conversation, not to deliver a lecture.
• It's OK for your conversation to take place over time, in bits and pieces.
Set a positive example by being to***co-free.
• If you use to***co, it's never too late to quit.
For free help, visit smokefree.gov or call 1-800-QUIT-NOW. You may also contact us at Wabash County To***co Free Coalition.

We had a wonderful time visiting with the amazing students at The Montessori School at WPC for a To***co-Free Presentation!

Through fun activities, simple science, and lots of great questions, students learned:
🫁 How their lungs work
🚫 Why to***co, smokeless, and va**ng products are harmful
💪 How to make healthy choices
⭐ "KNOW" why they can say “NO” with confidence

Our goal is to empower kids early with knowledge and skills. They were curious and thoughtful!

Thank you to the teachers and staff for welcoming us, and to the students for being such great listeners and participants. Keep choosing healthy, keep asking questions, and keep being YOU!
