💙Emplify Health by Gundersen Wabasha Hospital and Clinics Expands Cancer Care Close to Home💙
For too long, cancer patients in the Wabasha area have faced the exhausting burden of traveling to out of town for chemotherapy and oncology care—journeys that can feel overwhelming when strength is already in short supply. Now, that struggle ends.
Starting this January, Emplify Health by Gundersen Wabasha Hospital proudly introduced outpatient chemotherapy and oncology services right here in our community, alongside a new palliative care program designed to provide comfort and dignity when it’s needed most.
“If you have a loved one undergoing chemotherapy, you understand how draining it is—not just the treatment itself, but the travel. Having care close to home means everything,” shares Abby Oxendine, manager of clinic nursing.
Dr. Kurt Oettel, an oncologist from La Crosse, will be available in Wabasha twice a month to see patients, ensuring expert care is accessible without the long drive. New patients can begin their journey with Dr. Oettel locally, and those already receiving care can easily transition with a simple referral.
“Our mission is to bring personalized, expert care to our patients’ doorsteps,” says Kim Wolter, Director of Inpatient Services. “Convenience isn’t just about location—it’s about peace of mind.”
Currently, chemotherapy infusions are carefully scheduled to provide focused, personalized care. Emplify Health by Gundersen Wabasha Hospital has six infusion chairs available and can accommodate patients who require extended infusion times with upgraded recliners for patient comfort during longer treatments. As demand grows, there are plans to expand services further, ensuring patients can maintain their treatment schedules without added stress—all within the familiar, supportive environment of their local hospital.
Bringing together chemotherapy, oncology, palliative care, lab services, primary care, and pharmacy all in one place allows for seamless coordination among providers. Nurse practitioner Sara Venzke, joining in March, will collaborate closely with Dr. Oettel to ensure patients receive comprehensive support tailored to their treatment, comfort, and overall health needs.
“Patients can now receive their chemotherapy, see their oncologist, and access palliative care—all in a single visit,” Wolter explains. “This holistic approach not only simplifies care but truly transforms the patient experience.”
Behind the scenes, dedicated staff like pharmacist Rachel Zander and nurse Makala Hansen have undergone specialized training to ensure the highest standards of care. Their commitment reflects a deep empathy and a shared mission to support patients through every step of their journey.
“I feel called to walk alongside patients during this difficult time,” Hansen says. “Providing care close to home means we can support them fully—not just medically, but emotionally and spiritually.”
The team at Emplify Health by Gundersen Wabasha Hospital and Clinics is honored to bring these vital services to the community, easing the burden on patients and their families.
“During such a challenging time, our goal is to surround patients with compassionate care, close to the people who love and support them,” Wolter affirms. “We are here to provide hope, healing, and comfort—right here at home.”
