I had a conversation today with the father of a 3 year old child regarding an evaluation. It turned into the importance of language development. Although I'm not a speech therapist, every SLP I've ever talked with verifies that language is foundational for everything we do as humans. To learn any language it must be heard so make sure your child's hearing is where it needs to be. A child cannot say words they have not heard, cannot read words if they do not have the background knowledge of the sounds, and cannot write without the language to do so. As Hank the Cowdog says, "Without language, we would all be speechless."

I recently worked with a 4 year old male who was hospitalized many times during his first two years for various surgical procedures related to cardiac concerns. He is doing very well physically but emotionally and behaviorally he seemed to be responding from a place of anxiety and fear. This greatly escalated when told "No". I asked his mother if anyone had discussed medical trauma with her. She said she had never heard of such. This is an area that should be probed when other common areas are negative for abuse and neglect.

The Fiefer Assessment of Reading was recently published and is unique in that it is based on a neuropsychological view of dyslexia. It helps determine not only if dyslexia is present but also the specific dyslexia subtype. If you or your child is struggling with reading, we can identify why and how best to intervene.
