Happy Research Tuesday!🧠🗣

Research Tuesday! Children with hearing loss may not reach the same level of reading proficiency as their peers with typical development. Audiologists and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have important roles to play in preventing this problem early in children's development. In this LSHSS tutorial, the authors aim to communicate how the habilitation practices of audiologists and the intervention services of SLPs can support early literacy skill development in children with hearing loss. Authors Elizabeth Runnion and Shelley Gray describe key findings from peer-reviewed research articles to provide a review of early literacy skill development, to explain the relationship between early literacy skills and conventional reading skills, and to highlight findings from early literacy skill intervention studies that included children with hearing loss who use spoken language. The article concludes with a hypothetical case study to illustrate how audiologists and SLPs can support early literacy acquisition in children with hearing loss. Findings from studies of young children with hearing loss suggest that a promising approach to improving reading outcomes is to provide explicit early literacy instruction and intervention. https://on.asha.org/2ABMBYc

Spotlight Sunday🔆 Meet student clinician Emily!✨

• What setting do you want to work in and why?

”Upon graduating, my goal is to work in a medical setting. I am interested in swallowing therapy, and my hope is to work with adult and geriatric populations. I am excited to begin a career in this amazing field and to make a positive impact in the lives of my clients in each setting I have the opportunity to work in!🌸⭐️”- Emily

• What has been the best experience in the graduate program so far?

”The best experience in this program has been to actually see the difference you’re making such as a child saying something you’ve been working on all semester. I also had the privilege to hold a class for Ecuadorian mothers and coach them on how to talk with their babies to promote expressive language!🌼⭐️"- Rachel
