Lone Star TMS is proud to be the first to provide Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to the Waco area. TMS has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of depression after failure of an antidepressant, although there is accumlating evidence that it may be effective in a variety of other brain disorders. TMS uses a strong, pulsed magnetic field to induce electrical activity on very specific areas of the brain. Over the full course of treatment, this effectively retrains the underactive, depressed area of the brain to a more normal level of activity. Patients may drive themselves to and from their treatments. TMS is currently a second line treatment (after failure of one antidepressant) in the American Psychiatric Association's Treatment Algorithm for Depression. It is an alternative to medication augmentation strategies and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Lone Star TMS uses the Neurostar Therapy treatment device -- the same device used at major academic and medical centers around the world, including Harvard Medical School, Duke University, the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins and Walter Reed Hospital. For individuals wishing to learn more about TMS, a consultation can be scheduled to discuss this as a patential treatment option.
