🌍 Upright Africa is back in Zambia! 🇿🇲 Before heading into the DRC for a 6-week mission, we explored remote communities in northeast Zambia to prepare for a future surgical campaign later this year.

💛 One of the highlights? Reuniting with our sweet friend Erica — now tumor-free and all smiles! 🙏✨ There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a child’s joy after receiving life-changing care.

đźš‘ Stay tuned as we journey back into Congo and work to make an impact in the communities that need it most.

🚨 Mission Accomplished! 🇿🇲✊

Upright Africa just wrapped up our first-ever Surgical Mission in Zambia — completing 180 life-changing surgeries in just 8 days! 💪🏽✨

The energy was high, the teamwork unstoppable, and every patient is now stable and recovering well 🙌🏾. The local team adapted fast and is now fully on board — already asking when we’re coming back.

This is just the beginning.

It is with an incredibly heavy heart that we share the tragic loss of one of Upright Africa’s early team members, Michel Kitungwa, who was killed a few days ago in an act of senseless violence.

Michel, along with two colleagues, was attacked by bandits while traveling in a vehicle. All three lost their lives.

Michel was more than just a teammate — he was kind, funny, humble, full of energy, and one of the nicest people you could ever meet. His smile lit up every room and every moment we shared.

He played a key role during the formative years of Upright Africa, and his contributions helped shape the foundation of what we are today.

Michel, we hope you have found eternal peace. We are heartbroken, but so proud to have known you. Your memory, laughter, and spirit will remain with us always.

Rest in peace, dear friend. 🕊️.

🌍 Upright Africa in Action!

We’ve been busy behind the scenes—and the impact is growing! 💪🏾

In Nyimba, Zambia, our community outreach is in full swing. We’ve visited 7 villages, sharing the incredible news of our first surgical mission in the region. The response has been amazing! 🤝

Thanks to our new partnership with the Nyimba Foundation, and recognition from the Ministry of Health, we’re making major strides toward long-term health impact. 🇿🇲

Meanwhile, we’re continuing preparations to send more food containers to vulnerable communities in the DRC. Stay tuned for updates on our upcoming deliveries. 🛻🍱

Our hearts remain with Congo—we’re closely watching the political landscape and praying for peace and stability. 🇨🇩❤️

We’ve been quiet on here—but not because we’ve been idle.

Right now, Upright Africa and our incredible partners are in the field, distributing over 40,000+ pounds of food to approximately 30,000 people in one of the hardest-hit areas of the war in Congo.

Thanks to donated food(Hambre Cero) transportation(WER), and the tireless work of our local logistics team(Provide Hope in action and Coopera Congo) we’re reaching some of the most vulnerable communities—where others have struggled to go.

This mission hasn’t been easy and is still ongoing, but we expect to complete the final deliveries by Tuesday. These people are in desperate need, and while this isn’t a permanent solution, it’s a critical lifeline during an unimaginable time.

Thank you to everyone who continues to stand with us. We’re committed to seeing this through—for as long as it takes.

Big Updates from Upright Africa!

For the past month, we’ve been working tirelessly behind the scenes to coordinate a critical food delivery to some of the hardest-hit areas in Congo. As the war continues, we’re collaborating with incredible partners and hope to announce our first delivery very soon—stay tuned for details!

Meanwhile, we’ve expanded our impact to Zambia, where we’ve already conducted site visits in underserved areas. With the support of new partners, we’re moving quickly to provide help. Since our surgical missions in Congo are currently impossible due to the conflict, we are committed to helping vulnerable populations in every way we can.

Upright Africa remains steadfast in its mission to serve those in need, no matter the challenges. Thank you for your continued support!

Amid the turmoil in Eastern DRC, we find hope in young Exauce. We first met him at 4 years old when he underwent surgery, and today, at 13, he’s thriving. Despite the war unfolding in his city of Bukavu, Exauce stays focused on his studies, drawing and still finds joy playing with his friends. Stay safe, dear Exauce—you truly are a miracle!

Update from Upright Africa

With so much happening, it’s hard to know where to begin. First and foremost, all our friends and partners are safe and doing their best to stay out of harm’s way.
Upright Africa has a significant presence in the areas most impacted by the current conflict. Many of the towns that have fallen are places where we’ve run our surgical campaigns. Right now, Uvira is under attack and could fall soon. Sadly, all signs point toward Kalemie—our base—as the next target.
Our focus is on helping our team and some family members there remain safe. Material things can be replaced. Our message to everyone on the ground is clear: if the conflict reaches you, prioritize safety over everything else. This isn’t our fight, and staying safe is the only way to be ready to act when this dark chapter ends.
We appreciate your thoughts and support during this difficult time.

Returning to the DRC:
As I step back into the Democratic Republic of Congo, emotions run high. After more than a decade of living and walking in another’s shoes, this place has become my second home. I’ll travel into the south of the country and decide best course of action once on the ground.
Seeing, hearing, and experiencing the struggles of so many vulnerable people is overwhelming far beyond what most can imagine. I feel blessed to be in a position to help, yet burdened by the weight of witnessing it all.
Life can be puzzling at times.
Thank you for following along on this journey. I will keep you posted through these challenging times.

Finding Hope in the Midst of Uncertainty

As war continues and misinformation spreads, our partners, friends, patients, and communities are doing everything they can to survive. Some are staying put while others are fleeing to more stable areas

With the help of a teammates family, Kadada has begun her journey to our home base in Kalemie. Meanwhile, another team member and his family are navigating multiple borders, seeking safe passage.

This is an incredibly difficult and emotional time for Upright Africa and those close to us. We stand in solidarity with everyone fighting for safety, truth, and a future beyond conflict.

Amid the ongoing chaos, we have received word that Kadada and her host family are safe. Some shops have reopened, allowing them to get food, but movement remains extremely dangerous. For now, they will stay in Goma until safe passage is possible.
Nationally, the situation is growing more uncertain, with reports that Bukavu may be M23’s next target. We have a major concern for our Feeding and Malnutrition program which lies in the path they are currently traveling. We are doing everything we can to evacuate team members and provide assistance where possible.
Please keep sending positive energy to those most at risk.

This morning, Goma has fallen under M23 control, with the military given two days to hand over all arms.

Our dear Kadada, the Ananas family, and countless friends and patients remain in Goma, now at the mercy of war.

Please take a moment to send positive energy their way. Let’s come together to find ways to protect the innocent people caught in this devastating conflict.
