Today, we proudly commemorate the 160th anniversary of the McLennan County Medical Society (MCMS), founded on April 30, 1866, when ten dedicated Waco physicians came together to share knowledge and improve public health in a time of limited medical understanding and resources.
From those early days—when physicians traveled by horseback, treated patients in homes, and worked with few effective therapies—MCMS physicians cultivated collaboration, innovation, and service. Our founders established a culture of learning and accountability that continues to define our profession today.
As medicine advanced, so did our community. Care evolved from home visits to modern offices and hospitals. MCMS physician members helped establish clinics, hospitals, and training programs—including one of the nation’s first family medicine residencies created by a county medical society, Waco Family Medicine in 1969.
Through times of crisis, MCMS physicians have consistently answered the call. From treating victims of the 1953 Waco tornado without charge to leading immunization efforts that helped eliminate polio locally, our members have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of this community.
Over the decades, MCMS has played a vital role in shaping organized medicine locally and across Texas. Waco physicians helped lead the Texas Medical Association, contributed to national medical advancement, and brought early recognition to the importance of coordinated, community-based care. On April 18, 2026 at TexMed, Bradford W. Holland, MD was sworn in as the 161st president of the Texas Medical Association. Dr. Holland is the first Waco physician to hold this position since 1968.
Today, Waco stands as a regional center for advanced medical care, offering a full spectrum of specialties and technologies. This progress reflects 160 years of dedication, innovation, and service by MCMS physicians.
As we honor our past, we also look ahead. MCMS remains committed to improving access to care, advancing medical knowledge, and supporting physicians in delivering the highest quality care to all members of our community.
Thank you for being part of this enduring legacy.
