At Lakeview Clinic, you can rest assured that our optometrists will work closely with your primary physician to monitor and advise on complications related to diabetes, ocular complications from systemic medications, potential vascular complications such as stroke or hypertension, multiple sclerosis, and systemic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

We accept medical insurance, but are out-of-network with vision insurance plans. There are a wide variety of reasons your exam may be considered medical rather than routine. We recommend calling your insurance provider prior to your appointment to confirm your coverage. A helpful vision verification checklist is available on our website.

The health of your eyes is closely linked to the health of the rest of your body. Conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, autoimmune diseases, and even brain tumors can manifest in the eyes before symptoms appear elsewhere.

Choose an eye doctor who prioritizes comprehensive health screening, not just vision correction. Optometrists and Ophthalmologists who are well-versed in systemic health conditions can detect early warning signs and coordinate with your primary care physician or specialists. Lakeview Clinic Optometrists can easily view information in your medical chart and communicate with your primary care physician when needed. This is an added benefit of our comprehensive care approach! In addition, your primary care doctor can easily see your eye exam chart and concerns raised by your Lakeview optometrist.

If your eye exam involves certain health concerns or existing medical conditions, your visit may be billed to your medical insurance rather than your vision plan. If you have an unmet deductible, the cost of the exam will apply to your deductible, and you’ll receive a bill for the amount contracted with your insurance company. Your insurer should be able to tell you if you’ve met your deductible and/or what amount is still needed to meet that deductible.

Lakeview Clinic recommends always verifying your benefits with your insurance company. A Vision Benefit Verification Checklist is available on our website to assist you with obtaining the appropriate information from your insurance company. Coverage details vary depending on the specific plan, so it’s important to check with your insurance company for information about coverage, co-pays, referrals, or specialist visits.

If you have diabetes, taking care of your eyes is just as important as managing your blood sugar.
So how often should you have a diabetic eye exam?
👉 Once a year is the general recommendation for most people with diabetes, whether you have type 1 or type 2. However, you may need more frequent exams if you already have diabetic retinopathy or other eye complications, or are pregnant and have diabetes. Occasionally, your eye doctor may notice changes that require closer monitoring.
These annual exams are important because diabetes can lead to a condition called diabetic retinopathy, which damages the blood vessels in your retina. It often develops without symptoms in the early stages, but if left untreated, it can lead to permanent vision loss. Use the link below to learn more about diabetic retinopathy in Lakeview Optometrist, Dr. Tracy Jackson's informative article! 👇
