🌾 Forgotten Farms of Manhattan: 1780–1810 🗽
The Long Island Genealogist

Long before the concrete jungle, Manhattan was a patchwork of sprawling farms, owned by Dutch settlers, British loyalists, and early American families. Between 1780 and 1810, the island was dotted with farm names like:

👉 Delancey Farm
👉 Bayard Farm
👉 Apthorpe Estate
👉 Kip’s Bay Farm
👉 Dyckman Farm
👉 Lispenard Meadows
👉 Trinity Church Farm
👉 Rhinelander Estate
👉 Brevoort Farm
👉 Hopper Farm

These weren’t just names—they were the roots of neighborhoods we now know as SoHo, Chelsea, the Upper West Side, and beyond. Many of today’s streets trace the boundaries of these old farms.

Exploring these names is like peeling back layers of the city’s history. Ever wonder where your neighborhood came from? It might just be built on a forgotten farm.

Archaeologists in Virginia have just uncovered the foundation of an 18th-century building that was part of Williamsburg Bray School, the oldest known schoolhouse for Black children in America. The schoolhouse itself has recently been moved to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, where the structure is being restored. Researchers are also trying to identify the descendants of the enslaved students who were taught there — and encouraged to accept their enslavement as part of God's plan.

The centuries-old foundation of the schoolhouse is almost perfectly intact, and experts also unearthed a cellar full of artifacts like handmade ceramics and slate pencil fragments. Though some of the items appear to be linked to enslaved people and Indigenous tribes, other objects likely date back to more modern times. A number of the artifacts may have even belonged to some of America's first female college students attending William & Mary University in the early 20th century.
