May’s Athlete of the Month has been a mainstay of varsity sports for 2 years now at Wahoo Public Schools. Eli Shada may have confused NASA a couple of times this year with the lower orbit that he sent shots in to, including a 60 foot bomb that broke a 50+ year old school record. He wrapped up his spring with a State Title in the Shot and a 7th place effort in discus.

Eli is a 3-sport standout for the Warriors as an all-state caliber player on the football and basketball teams. He totes a 3.56 GPA and is also involved in FCA, FBLA, and summer kids camps at Wahoo. Eli originally picked up a shot at the age of 8 and set a state record, that was recently broken by his little brother Grant. We can all agree that they have a pretty great throwing coach in Grandpa Randy. Eli enjoys competing in track and the throws particularly because “You have to keep a competitive edge, because somebody is always ready to step up behind you.” His advice to young athletes looking to succeed is to “work hard and trust the process.”

Pregame Music: None, prefers to zone in and visualize
Super Power: Time Travel
GOAT: Michael Jordan

Eli wanted to give a special shoutout to his throwing coach and grandpa Randy Shada for his support and coaching over the years. Congrats Eli!

February's Athlete of the Month is the definition of Dominance. Carver Konzem won all of his matches by pinfall in the first period this season including all 4 of his matches at the NSAA State Wrestling Tournament this last weekend to become a Class “B” State Heavyweight Champion.

Carver is a senior at Ashland Greenwood who shines on the mat and the classroom toting a 4.0 GPA and 34 ACT score. He plans to enroll at UNL where he has received a Regents Scholarship to study Mechanical Engineering. Carver is involved in FBLA and has helped with summer wrestling camps for middle school students. Carver started wrestling in 1st grade at Norris and then transitioned to NWTC in Lincoln. Carver has enjoyed wrestling be "it's just you out there onthe mat with the chance to prove yourself and how good you can be, and to show off all the hard work you have done." Carver commented that he also loves wrestling because it teaches you to be a man and grow in maturity. Landon's advice to young athletes is that losing is fine/ok. Losing is where you can learn the most.

Quick Facts:
Prematch Music: Raging Brachydios from Monster Hunter and Prayer
Super Power: Always Winning

Carver wanted to give thanks first to God for giving him the clarity to use the abilities he was given, his parents for doing more for him than they needed to, to his coaches for working with him and being open-minded and flexible to help him reach his goals, and to his teammates and wrestling for having a lot of fun.

Congrats Carver!

January's Athlete of the Month towers above not only us, but also the competition. We're recognizing Brody Johnson of East Butler for his stellar play on the court so far this season. The 6'11" senior is averaging 16 PPG, 15 RPG and 5 blocks. Watching him dominate on the court, you may not realize how far he's come after overcoming PANS and lyme disease that sidelined him for 4 years. Brody also participates in FFA, FBLA, FCCLA, and participates in the high jump and 200 m dash in track. He hopes to continue his basketball career at the next level and study Business Administration. Brody's advice to young athletes is to remember that "if you get knocked down, get back up and if you feel like quitting, don't give up," Brody's love for basketball is evident from his fight to get back on the court. He loves the competition, and getting the opportunity to showcase his hard work in the gym and weight room.Quick Facts: Super Power: Invisibility Pre-game Music: 80's RockGOAT: Larry BirdBrody wanted to give a shoutout to Coach Hoffman for helping him improve his game and his parents for all of their help.
