Children who have gone through intense trauma, like abuse or the loss of a loved one, benefit greatly from having safe spaces to play, create and relax in.

Thanks to a gift from Panda Cares, the charity affiliated with Panda Express, through the Sanford Health Foundation, a new safe space with art supplies, toys and more was opened at the Sanford Traumatic Stress Treatment Center and the Sanford Children's CARE Clinic. This room gives children in the Fargo region a place where they can feel comfortable, helping them heal and recover.

On the evening of September 26, the lights of Breckenridge High School’s football field will shine a little brighter, not just for the Breckenridge Cowboys as they take on the Otter Tail Central Bulldogs, but for the entire community rallying around a cause far greater than the scoreboard.

That night, CHI St. Francis, a proud member of CommonSpirit Health, and Sanford Health will join forces to spotlight the importance of early cancer detection, highlight treatment resources, and raise funds for cancer research. Their shared mission is simple but powerful: to save lives, provide hope, and ensure access to the best possible care for the people of Breckenridge and the surrounding region.

"My parents were told multiple times that I wouldn't survive. I was baptized in the hospital. They never thought I was coming home. Deb was part of that care that made sure that I got to come home and then someday have three babies of my own."

Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Deb Koens cared for Josie Folden during her first days of life in 1995. Twenty-eight years later, at the end of 2023, she cared for Josie's third child, Luci, in the same NICU.

"To be able to know that I was fortunate to be able to care for both of them, it kind of makes you feel like this has been a long, successful career," said Koens.

In addition to sponsoring the event, the Wahpeton clinic was represented by a participating team that included Dr. Verkuilen, optometrist; Brandee Kuznia, mental health nurse practicioner; Kelsey Kent, occupational therapist; and Kari Foertsch, registered nurse. The team also hosted a "split-the-pot" style game at the event, raising $600 for charity.
