I'm a nutritionist and my passion is sharing knowledge aimed at improving the health of our North Shore community through food. Hawaii's chronic disease rates are skyrocketing and the way to turn things around is lifestyle change that emphasizes healthy eating habits. I am a strong advocate for eating local, promoting sustainable farming practices and improving Hawaii's food security. I truly believe that when we form a close relationship with the land and people who work hard to feed us, we inherently prioritize our health.

Hope we can see some traction here! Not only would this benefit local agriculture and business, more sustainable farming would help to restore the land and perhaps even prevent the conditions that allowed the fire in the first place.

The Aug. 8 wildfires are making many in the Maui community reconsider the role that tourism plays in the island’s economy. One of the organizations working toward creating changes is the Maui Food Hub. HPR's Catherine Cluett Pactol shares how supporting farmers can be part of that shift.

Indigenous Peoples Day seems like a good time to share a fun announcement: I've got merch! But not just any merch. North Shore Nutrition is giving back! Profits from the sales support local organizations working to promote Hawai'i food sovereignty.

The design - by the very talented .leigh.art - features crops that were vital to Hawaii's own indigenous people. It embodies the goals, values, and vision of North Shore Nutrition, and includes the following elements:

* ‘Ulu (Breadfruit): One of the “canoe crops” brought to the islands by Polynesian voyagers. ‘Ulu was a primary food source and has great potential for decreasing reliance on imported food. Symbolic of Hawai’i food sovereignty movement
* Kalo (Taro root): Another canoe crop that was central to native Hawaiian culture. Symbolizes cultural preservation and connection
* Olena (Turmeric): Used to cure many ailments in ancient Hawai’i and still valued for its medicinal and culinary applications. Symbolizes health and longevity
* Naupaka: Endemic to Hawai’i, helps to prevent beach erosion. Symbolizes conservation

I’ve got 3 styles in a range of colors and sizes. Send me a DM if you’re interested😁

Cynthia Archibald, or “Archy" as she is commonly known, has been a resident of Oahu's North Shore for over 20 years. Cynthia received an MS in Holistic Nutrition in 2017. Her final thesis focused on “farm-to-school” programs and their potential to vastly improve sectors such as public health, ...

It's hard to imagine that the land that burned on Maui was once a fertile wetlands with large 'Ulu (breadfruit) trees. The past two centuries of irresponsible agricultural practices caused a major shift in the ecology of the region, setting the stage for conditions that allowed the fires to ravage thousands of acres.

Most of my commentary on agriculture has to do with our islands' public health needs, our food security, and our food sovereignty, but events such as this are a stark reminder of other terrifying consequences of poor management of agricultural land.

24 hours up in the mountains with no cell service - does it get much better?

Throw in some beautiful weather, trail running, epic views, and tasty local food cooked over a fire; and I'd say it's a pretty great life!

Grateful to Farm Link Hawai‘iand our many local fishermen and farmers for supplying us with fresh local marlin, onions, mushrooms, and lychee. We also roasted some 'ulu, thanks to our neighbors' latest harvest.

In addition to health and environmental concerns regarding tuna, there are major human rights issues at play. Modern day slavery is alive and well. And a lesser known concern involves risks to marine observers aboard fishing vessels. Bottom line: you vote with your dollar, so think carefully about canned tuna

In the past decade, more than a dozen people responsible for ensuring safe, responsible, sustainable fishing have died or disappeared at sea.

This is potentially a huge setback for the recent progress with Hawaii's Farm-to-School initiatives. I truly hope we see resolution. Farm-to-School programs benefit the economy, the environment, the farmers/suppliers, and the children. It's also an important step toward reducing our reliance on imported food.

Local food producers and advocates are vexed by the department's U-turn.

Farm to School is slowly gaining traction in Hawaii and I love that poi is on the forefront! Research shows that Farm to School programs support childhood cognitive development and help instill healthy habits at home as well. Sourcing from our local communities support the economy, reduces our environmental footprint, and improves the islands' food sovereignty. It truly benefits every sector of society

The traditional Hawaiian delicacy is part of the state Department of Education's farm-to-school initiative, which aims to promote food sustainability and improve student health. DOE officials said procurement challenges have limited other schools from participating in the poi program. HPR's Casey Ha...
