The Power of Play in OT & Speech Therapy

Play isn’t “just fun” - it’s the work of childhood. Through play, kids build language, strengthen motor skills, boost sensory processing, and grow confidence without even realizing they’re learning.

When we follow a child’s lead, play becomes a powerful tool for connection, regulation, and real therapeutic progress.

Let them explore. Let them imagine. Let them play 💕🌺🌈🏝️

👻 Spooky Fine Motor Fun at Home!

This Halloween season, we’re working on those tiny but mighty fine motor skills with some Play-Doh magic!

Try these fun finger exercises with your little ones:
👉 Finger Press - Squish and flatten the dough like a spooky ghost!
👉 Pincer Grip - Pinch small pieces to make monster eyes or pumpkin stems
👉 Flat Press - Flatten dough with the palm for creepy crawly bases
👉 Pull - Stretch the dough like a mummy’s wrap!
👉 Thumb Press - Make thumbprint pumpkins or bat wings

These playful movements help strengthen hands and improve coordination.

✨Tiny moments in PLAY create BIG STEPS in language!! ✨

For our early talkers in speech therapy- play isn’t “just playing”. It’s where language comes alive!

Whether it’s flipping through a wordless book or exploring a favorite toy, every giggle, pause, and look is an opportunity to build connection and language.

Here’s how you can bring speech goals into playtime:
📚WORDLESS BOOKS: Talk about what you see, guess what happens next, take turns “telling” the story
🧸 TOYS: Wait, pause, and model simple words such as “up” “more” “open” “go”
🫡 FOLLOW THEIR LEAD: When your child takes charge, they learn that COMMUNICATION MATTERS!

Did you know communication starts long before a child says their first words? From the very beginning, babies are building the foundation for speech and language!

📣 Reflexive sounds (crying, coping) ➡️ the earliest way infants express needs
📣 Babbling and Vocal Play ➡️ experimenting with sounds and turn-taking
📣 Gestures and Imitation ➡️ pointing, waving, and copying you to share meaning
📣 First Words ➡️ Connecting sounds to people, objects, and experiences

Every stage matters and parents play a huge told just by responding, modeling, and engaging in everyday moments!

Another A-MAZING piece of work by my kiddo yesterday. He didn’t want me touching his blocks. I respected his space. I commented as he lined them up then color-coded the blocks all on his own. (Great fine motor skills!)
I joined him in his world; I didn’t force him into mine.

Core Words vs. Fringe Words - What’s the difference?

If your child uses an AAC (Alternative and Augmentative Communication) device, you’ve probably seen lots of buttons with different words.
💪 Core Words are everyday building blocks of language. They make up 80% of what we say!
🎯Fringe Words are more specific - like dinosaur, pancake, or unicorn. They help add detail and personality to communication.

💡Why it matters: Teaching core words gives your child more flexibility to express themselves in any situation, while fringe words help them talk about their unique interests. We need both for a rich and meaningful vocabulary!

🫶 Tips for Parents: Model using both on your child’s AAC device-even if they aren’t pushing the buttons yet. Every tap is a step toward confident communication!
