It has been a long time since our last Annual Client Picnic event. Ka Lima underwent many changes since then, from the COVID-19 pandemic to moving into our new building and the transition of our Executive Director as Chantal Ratte passed the torch on to JD Wyatt. After many years of change and transitioning, we held our first client picnic this year on August 15th at Waihe’e Beach Park. It was a fun day for everyone as clients and staff got to spend the day playing with water balloons, going down the water slide, playing games, eating good food, and enjoying quality time with one another.

One year ago today, Jennifer and her family were one of many residents who lost their home to the wild fires in Lahaina. It is such a blessing that she and her family had made it out safely. Jennifer currently resides in Napili, living with her sister and her family. Despite living even further into the west side, Jennifer has remained dedicated to commuting all the way from Napili to attend her day program here at Ka Lima O Maui. She gets picked up by paratransit between 6:30am-7:00am and arrives home in the afternoon between 2:00pm-3:00pm, and she does this 4 days a week. Jennifer appreciates being able to come to program to participate in various activities with peers and be a part of the community, and most of all continue her employment in secure shredding. Throughout the year, Jennifer has been in good spirits, but really misses home. But there is hope for her to return as plans are in progress for rebuilding her home.

Our hearts go out to Lahaina as today marks one year since the tragic event. Slowly but surely, progress has been made to restore the 'āina of Lahaina town. Ka Lima has done some part as our grounds crews have gone out to locations to help keep areas clean and clear, as well as our waiver program volunteering at the HUBs to gather and distribute supplies to those in need. Let us all stand strong and support the people of Lahaina.

In honor of International Assistance Dogs Week, we want to show our appreciation to Maui’s Assistance Dogs of Hawaii. Our participants enjoy volunteering at the campus, located in upcountry Makawao. They assist with clean-up around the facility, walking the dogs, brushing their coats, and increasing social interactions for both the dogs and participants. Like us, their goal is to provide assistance to increase independence and a better quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

We commemorate July as National Disability Pride Month or National Disability Independence Month due to the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Both are crucial milestones in the journey toward accessibility and equality for all people, regardless of the type of disability they may have.
It is an event that promotes awareness for the about 61 million adults in the United States who live with at least one disability. These disabilities may not be physical or even visible: they could be learning, developmental or intellectual disabilities, or mental or chronic illness.

But as common as disability is, not many people know how to talk about disability or how to interact with disabled people.

"To so many people, [disability] remains a mystery, this scary and overwhelming topic," says disability rights activist and writer Emily Ladau. "But that's not what we should do when it comes to disability, because it's just something that's part of what makes people who they are."

National Disability Pride Month is not just about awareness—it’s about understanding and respect. It emphasizes the need to see individuals with disabilities for their abilities and potential, acknowledging their struggles and applauding their triumphs.

Melba Machacon is a new DSW in the Waiver Program. She was born in the Philippines and moved here at the age of 18. She currently resides in Kahului with her daughter, her daughter’s family, and her sister. Since arriving, Melba has worked in various roles, including at the Hyatt Regency Maui, Whaler’s General Store, and Home Made Bakery (yes, she can make malasadas!). Prior to joining Ka Lima O Maui, she worked at Maui Adult Day Care, where she continues to be employed. She joined the Waiver Program after being recruited by friends. .Outside of work, Melba enjoys shopping, with Macy’s being her favorite store, and she has a passion for gardening. She loves to grow a variety of plants, from roses to vegetables. Additionally, she enjoys cooking, especially using fresh vegetables. When asked about her experience working at Ka Lima O Maui, she expressed her happiness in working with disabled individuals, stating, “It is a challenge, but I love it!”

Welcome back to Ka Lima O Maui, Jody Cambra! She said that she enjoys coming to program so she can hang out with her friends such as Brandon, Eva, Lynnell and Fae. Jody is visually impaired, so the Waiver Program got her braille Uno cards and regular playing cards so she can enjoy a game with her friends.
