"I see Dr. Kim the Pulmonologist, one of the specialists (at Maui Memorial Outpatient Clinic), and have always had an excellent experience. Staff are welcoming and friendly, happy to help you if you need it. They have a new computerized self check in which is easy to use and saves time, however they also have a desk full of friendly medical receptionists if you are nervous about using a computer. Toilets are nice and clean as is the rest of the clinic. No 'hospital smell' and plenty of comfy seating, although they are always on time so I barely get the chance to sit before I'm called in. Easy free parking and no it is a single story building so no steps for those with disabilities... We are lucky to have such an exemplary clinic on island, along with a host of medical specialists backed up by dedicated staff."

Thank you for your kind words and thoughtful note of gratitude! Your feedback warms our hearts and inspires us to continue serving our community and providing exceptional care.

April 19–25, 2026 is National Volunteer Week, and we’re proud to celebrate our incredible Auxiliary Volunteers 💙

Our volunteers bring compassion to life every day—supporting patients, families, and staff through the cookie cart and comfort cart, serving as compassionate companions, leading fundraising efforts, and creating meaningful moments of connection.

Their impact also reaches beyond our hospital walls with their heartfelt acts of giving—supporting local families through Adopt‑a‑Family and investing in the next generation of healthcare professionals through their Ed‑ucation junior volunteer scholarships.

We are so grateful for our volunteers, their dedication, generosity, and heart to give. They are truly the light of our hospitals and make all the difference. 🌟

HEALTHWISE THURSDAY!

Q: How can I avoid joint replacement surgery?

A: If you’re living with joint pain, you’re not alone. Whether your pain is from arthritis or just years of wear and tear, it can affect how you move and how good you feel.

Surgery can help in some cases, but it’s not usually the first step. There are plenty of other options you can try to reduce your pain, protect your joints, and possibly avoid joint replacement surgery altogether.

One of the first things you can do to ease joint strain is stick to a healthy weight. Eat a healthy diet, and try low-impact activities like swimming. Strong muscles also help protect your joints. Leg lifts, curls, and resistance training can help stabilize your knees and hips. Don’t forget to stretch.

You might not know this, but quitting smoking can help ease joint pain. Stopping smoking also protects your cartilage and bones, which is a big plus for long-term joint health.

In addition to lifestyle changes, over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can ease pain and inflammation. Some folks also (use) supplements such as glucosamine or chondroitin. Be sure to talk to your doctor before starting anything new.

Other non‑surgical options may include cortisone or hyaluronic acid injections, or minimally invasive procedures to address joint damage.

If you ever do need surgery, you’re in good hands here on Maui. Joint replacement is a big step, but it’s not your only option.

Maui Health offers top orthopedic care with a team of specialists, including board-certified surgeons and clinical staff. Call for a consultation or attend a free Total Joint Seminar, held monthly in Wailuku, to learn more about non-surgical and surgical options. Explore more about our Total Joint program or call the Maui Memorial Medical Center Outpatient Clinic at 808-442-5951 to schedule an appointment with one of our orthopedic experts.

"My husband was having urinary issues after a procedure he had done back in Chicago. While we were in your ER we had the pleasure of having Rich as our nurse. He spent hours with us, explaining everything that was being done all while changing these huge bags of fluid until my husband was stable enough to be discharged. And even though my husband was the patient, Rich took care of my needs as well going so far as getting me coffee from your cafeteria when it opened in the morning. I want to thank the entire staff of your ER, especially Rich for taking such good care of me and my husband."

Thank you for your kind words and thoughtful note of gratitude! Your feedback warms our hearts and inspires us to continue serving our community and providing exceptional care.

As part of our annual How to Save a Life event, students experienced healthcare beyond the classroom through interactive learning and hands-on skill building alongside Maui Health professionals.

The highlight of the day was a live trauma simulation that brought emergency care to life. Students witnessed the many roles that work together during a trauma case and how healthcare teams respond in critical moments. After the simulation, students engaged in thoughtful discussions—asking about career paths, training requirements, and what it truly means to serve patients and our community.

Experiences like these inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals and reinforce Maui Health’s commitment to education, prevention, and community care.

HEALTHWISE THURSDAY!

Q: What’s the deal with measles lately, and should we be worried here on Maui?

A: Measles is one of the most contagious viruses out there and while it might sound like something from the past, it’s showing up again across the U.S., raising concerns for local families and healthcare providers. It spreads through the air when someone coughs, sneezes, or even talks. You don’t need to touch anything, just being in the same room is enough if you’re unvaccinated. The virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after someone leaves.

Symptoms often start with a high fever and one of what doctors call the “three Cs”: cough, coryza (runny nose), and conjunctivitis (red, watery eyes), followed by a rash 3-5 days later. What makes it tricky is that people are contagious before they even know they’re sick, which is how outbreaks can spread so quickly, especially in places with low vaccination rates.

Measles can lead to serious complications like pneumonia, brain swelling, and even death. Young kids, especially those under five, are most at risk. Some may end up in the hospital, and it can also lead to long-term issues like hearing loss. Babies who are too young to be vaccinated are especially vulnerable.

The good news? The MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine is about 97% effective after two doses and offers lifelong protection for most people. It’s safe, with mild side effects like a sore arm or low fever. Even if you’re vaccinated, staying up to date helps protect babies, seniors, and others who can’t get the shot themselves. Not sure if you got both doses? Talk to your doctor. It’s safe to get another.

Here on Maui, some schools have low vaccination rates, and it only takes one case to cause a wider outbreak. Staying current on your vaccines protects your family and helps keep our island community safe and healthy.
