HEALTHWISE THURSDAY!

Q: How can I keep my brain healthy as I get older?

A: You can’t change the genes you’re born with, but you can take steps every day to protect your brain and lower your risk of memory problems as you get older.

Stay active and get regular exercise; moving your body improves circulation and increases blood flow to the brain. Eat in a way that’s good for your heart and brain – think Mediterranean-style meals with plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, and healthy fats. Make sleep a priority.

Several medical conditions can affect your brain in ways that accumulate over time. For example, having uncontrolled high blood pressure in middle age can increase your risk of dementia later in life. So, work with your doctor to manage conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease to reduce your risk.

Another great way to keep your brain functioning at its best? Use it! Challenge yourself by learning new skills, solving puzzles, playing a musical instrument, or writing stories. Engaging your mind regularly helps keep it sharp.

Finally, don’t forget to protect your brain from physical injury. Always wear a helmet during activities like biking (remember, you need specialized helmets for e-bikes) and take steps to reduce your risk of falls around the house to avoid head injuries.

Remember, it’s never too early or too late to start protecting your brain health. Whether you’re 30 or 80, a few simple changes can help you stay clear and focused throughout your lifetime.

Maui Health’s team of board‑certified neurologists provides expert care for a wide range of neurological conditions, offering the specialized support you need at every stage of life.

March is National Brain Injury Awareness Month and there’s no better moment to learn how to protect your brain and discover the resources available close to home. Explore our inpatient neurology services at https://k-p.li/4u6y53H.

"Took a friend in for a colonoscopy and it was a very positive experience, from calling the hospital for information about check in/parking etc, to discharge and help getting the patient into my car… The system is very well set up, you receive a number and an electronic board in the waiting area lights up and tracks the patient as they progress through the operative procedure, each aligned with a different colour. There are clean restrooms, a tuck shop, gift shop and a canteen selling very competitively priced meals, a cart giving out free iced tea and water comes through occasionally… My friend had a great experience, they gave him lunch after the op during his recovery period, he had no after effects from the anesthesia, they gave him a print out of all the info he needed to know from that day to his next appointment with the specialist, and they took him to the entrance in a wheelchair while I went to collect my car. The hospital is squeaky clean, with nice decor, well laid out and a great addition to Maui's health care."

Mahalo for your heartfelt words of gratitude! Reviews like these inspire us to continue delivering exceptional care to our community.

HEALTHWISE THURSDAY!

Q: How are platelet-rich plasma injections used to treat sports injuries?

A: Platelet-Rich Plasma, or PRP, is a treatment that takes your own blood and concentrates its healing components to help your body recover. It’s been used by everyone from pro athletes to weekend warriors to treat a range of injuries – especially those involving tendons, ligaments, and joints.

Platelets are like your body’s natural repair crew. When you get injured, they rush to the scene, bring their toolbox of growth factors, and get to work fixing the damage and calming inflamed tissue. With PRP, a small amount of your blood is drawn, then spun in a machine to concentrate the platelets. That rich mix is then injected back into your body where it needs help healing.

You may receive just one PRP injection, or sometimes a series of injections, depending on your injury. PRP is often combined with other treatments such as physical therapy, rest, or surgery.
Some of the conditions that can be treated with PRP therapy include osteoarthritis (like in the knee or shoulder); ACL tears or sprains; chronic back or neck pain; other muscle, joint, tendon, or cartilage injuries.

It’s important to know that while PRP can help your body heal, it’s not a quick fix. You’ll still need to follow your doctor’s treatment plan – whether that’s rest, rehab, or other treatments.
If you think PRP might be right for you, talk to your doctor.

Maui Health’s team of orthopedic specialists offers a wide range of treatments for sports injuries, including PRP injections. Call the Maui Memorial Medical Center Outpatient Clinic at 808-442-5951 for an appointment or visit mauihealth.org/ortho to learn more.

For the first Mālama ʻĀina service initiative of 2026, Maui Health partnered with Nohona Health for a volunteer workday at Hoʻōla in Waikapū—a two‑acre space dedicated to learning, healing, and cultivating essential lāʻau for local families. The day opened with introductions and intention‑setting, grounding our team in the history and purpose of the ʻāina. From there, volunteers worked together harvesting and cleaning ʻolena, gaining a deeper understanding of its cultural importance and healing uses along the way.

Together, we harvested over 70 pounds of ʻolena. A portion of which was shared with volunteers, while the remainder was packaged into half‑pound bags and distributed during Nohona Health’s community plant distribution event—further extending the impact of our collective efforts.

Mahalo to Nohona Health for welcoming our team and sharing their knowledge. Through Mālama ʻĀina, we continue to build meaningful bridges between healthcare and cultural preservation—one workday at a time.

Building the future of healthcare, one student at a time! 👩‍⚕️

Maui Memorial Medical Center recently welcomed Kamehameha Schools Maui high school students for an immersive career exploration day. Students toured the hospital, connected with clinical staff across departments, and learned about the many pathways that lead to medical careers — with many even signing up for our Junior Volunteer Program!

One student shared, “This visit helped me get a deeper dive into the career I want to pursue (and) helped me affirm that I want to go into the medical field and help people.”

Talent Acquisition Manager Jenel King added, “Opening our doors to students early is how we build future workforce pipelines — when students can see themselves in these roles and connect with our caregivers, healthcare careers become real, achievable, and inspiring.”

Mahalo to our teams and partners for helping inspire the next generation of Maui’s healthcare professionals. 💙🏥
